I'm talking more about guys that you draft that you have to develop. Everyone knew Diaz was a hitter when we traded for him.
What about Blanco? He's been in the system since forever and Brown is the one that decided to turn him into a starter. Odorizzi was an overpay.
Click drafted Arrighetti, Gordon, Whitcomb, Dezenzo, Melton, Loperfido, Wagner, Gilbert, and Clifford. He only oversaw 3 drafts, and didn’t have any picks in the top 2 rounds in 2 of those drafts. In the 2020 draft he only had 4 picks total. The only possible nit to pick (so far) on his draft prowess is whiffing on Tyler Whitaker.
I'm still trying to find the hard and fast rule that we must not allow Cam Smith to make the opening day roster.
Cam Smith just rifled a Megill fastball over the right field wall for a 2 run homer. He is a quality big league starter also
Keeping him up could cost $100M+ in value if it ruins his development and he busts (an outcome that is extremely unlikely). Starting his clock could cost tens of millions if it takes him some time to peak (possible). On the flip side, keeping him up could net tens of millions if he wins ROY (unlikely). And of course, keeping him up could net $100M+ if he’s the difference in winning another ring this season (extremely unlikely).
Worrying about service time was a 2014, coming off 100 losses for three consecutive years, thing. Right now, the Astros need to worry about breaking camp with the roster that provides them the best opportunity to win games and make the playoffs and win the world series. Worry about seven years from now seven years from now.
It would be cool if he did. However the Astros will need to clear some room on the 40 man roster. Perhaps the Astros work out a trade so not to just release guys that still have value for the organization, and he can get something back? Nonetheless, it is exciting to see Cam play so well.
If that was the mentality this front office took then Cam Smith wouldn’t even be on the team because they’d have kept Kyle Tucker.
Incorrect, Kris Gross was in Jeff Luhnow Front Office. Jeremy Pena 2018, Hunter Brown 2019, Spencer Arrighetti 2021 was Drafted by Kris Gross. 2021 Spencer Arrighetti, Joey Loperfido, Colton Gordon, Quincy Hamilton. 2022 Zach Dezenzo, Jacob Melton, Drew Gilbert, Ryan Clifford Kris Gross moved to the Mets, Mets GM David Stearns was also in Jeff Luhnow Front Office. Mets and Orioles have most of Jeff Luhnow People.
Cam Smith putting up Numbers early on Opening Day for 2 Months instead of Minor Leagues will help the Astros but also his Rookie of the Year Votes, based on HR, RBIS, Numbers.
