Long story short, expert recommendations for booster seat use are until they reach 4'9", but most states say children over 8 are not obligated to use a booster.

I come to this from a childhood where child seats were for infants and toddlers, not school-aged kids. But at some point over the last century, it became common for kids up to middle school age to still use booster seats.

I am supposed to be shuttling 3 other adults and our 4 kids around this Spring Break across Florida, and if all the kids have to use their car seats, then even an 8-seat van will likely not have enough space. Even though two of the kids are older than 8, because they're under 4'9", it's a non-starter to have them just sit in the seats without a booster.

So, how long did your kids stay in their booster seat?

    Until they were 4’9”.

I’m struggling to understand how a booster seat will take up more room than an adult. Are you talking about these?

Seat belts weren’t even required when I was a kid. I turned out just fine.

Yes, but you can’t really fit this style three in a row. But I guess we will find out later today.

We are going to try to catch the Rockets game in Orlando Wednesday night, so there is the GARM tie in.

Update: car seats fit but the adults stuck in the middle are going to be unhappy.

Most 8 year old are at least 5'5" nowadays.

    Thanks, food industry.

I remember as a kid, we didn't wear seatbelts. On road trips, I'd sleep laying down across the 3rd row, too. And when we didn't have enough seats, some of us would be sitting on the floor. Wild times.

With my own kids, I'm following the recommendations.

4'9" is an arbitrary # meant to be a guideline. For safety, it's about where the seat belt crosses their body. If the seat belt still crosses their neck, obviously that is bad. It should cross your chest.

Some cars have adjustable seat belts. Looking at your pic, it doesn't look like the seat belts are adjustable.

Depends on how you define booster seat. I've got a kid in grad school who still needs a boost every now and then.

O'really? Here in West Europe it is 4ft 26 and then you can sit in the regular seat with a belt.

You should drive down to W Palm Beach and catch an Astros game. Or Jupiter on Thursday or Friday.

We used to ride in the bed of my dad's pick up and we would stand up and hold onto the roof of the cab...........never had an issue LOL, man were we dumb, but dam we had fun as kids. I kind of feel sorry for kids these days, we had no phones or real inside games, our lives were outside with our friends playing all day

My kids were always small for their age. But, I didn't keep them in booster seats that long. Maybe 6 years old and 4'6".

The problem is all the kids who turned in.

4'6 is huge for a 6 year old, you're talking 2 separate kids here?
