U2. Were awesome in the beginning. They started to slip with Joshua Tree, and fell over the edge with Rattle and Hum. That was also when they became so full of themselves that they were a joke. When they covered Helter Skelter Bono announced that charles Manson stole the song from the Beatles and that U2 was going to bring it back, I was amazed. Who the hell are U2 to save the Beatles? What a pompus statement. They just took themselves way too seriously. Sunsequent albums almost all contiained a few good songs on it. It seems like they don't necessarily believe they are the saviors of Rock anymore, and are still better than half of the Linkin Park type crap bands that are out now. Their early work was top notch. There are better bands to come out of the 80's no doubt. If bands that spanned the 70's and 80's count then the Clash equals at least 3 U2's. But they were one of the best bands from the time.
I think they are ok, but what sticks with me is that they had touching performance at the super bowl just after 9/11. There was even a time or newsweek cover saying something about bono saving america. things sure have changed since.
