It's nothing like this. It's a loophole, the bill would theoretically never come due and looking at the downside if you're correct there would have to be a rebuild that would take about 3 years to clear the contracts and add talent to make another run. You know, the same amount of time to do a rebuild if an org didn't operate like the Eagles do and were doing a rebuild after a decade of success. I'll take the 3 down yrs.
The cap goes up each year (fingers crossed for no more pandemics). Also, I am not sure what your point was based on my response. The ask was about how could we spread Hunter's money owed over more years as he was in his last year. My response was you can add void years to spread out the guaranteed $$$ you would pay him. I am well aware of the consequences of adding void years as Diggs' contact is a glowing example of what could "go wrong" (so to speak).
If they had a real shot at bringing Allen here, I'm curious to see if they cut Autry. It would save them money, but we know how much Ryans prioritizes the defensive front, so it feels like he wouldn't cut Autry unless it would be a means to make a big splash on the d-line like this. I like Autry, and he's a versatile guy. But Allen is younger and just better.
Happy for CJ that he's gone, but unless his deal was restructured before the cut, the team only saves money if it's a post-June 1st designation. However, in that case, they can’t access the freed-up cap space until after the physical date of June 1st. Maybe Shaq’s cap savings will help cover the cost of rookie contracts, but this move could also hint that Nick Caserio plans to trade up in the draft, potentially meaning fewer rookies to sign. There’s still more work to be done but he possibilities oh the possibilities...
I was reading Alexander's article earlier, and he said they would save $2 million if it's not designated post June 1. But you have to think the move is more to save some cash for rookies, rookie extensions (hopefully Stingley), etc. It'd be a little weird to make this move for $2 million for free agents. On the personnel side, I'm kinda thrilled to see him gone. I saw a report somewhere over the last week that said they weren't seriously considering cutting him, which made such little sense. Whether it's internally, through the draft, through free agency or (most likely) all of the above, there are better guys out there to improve the interior of the line.
I wondered if they put that out there to try to get somebody to do a Kirk-like deal (i.e. a 7th for Mason)
