Yeah, I saw that video too. He would be a great add to any rotation. He felt like a consistency monster even if he wasn't a 1/2 type pitcher. Hopefully he can come back fully healthy.
Melton already has 1/3 a season in AAA. It seems like he should have stayed in camp until the absolute last on the non opening day candidates were sent out. I guess the injury is gonna be a little while.
He and Derek Fisher can compare notes. Melton deserves a shot to prove that he can hit at the big league level - but I will admit that I have long shared your sentiment. While every other part of the game seems easy for Melton - hitting doesn't. Maybe he becomes a very good platoon player - but I am skeptical of him becoming a long term starter.
I'm not even worried about Melton becoming a star. If he can hit right handed pitching at a slightly above average level I would be thrilled. A Meyers/Melton platoon with Melton occasionally shifting to right would likely be very valuable (and cheap) for the next 3 seasons.
This would be fine with me. The issue is that Melton was the top prospect for some time and Brown even kept him over Glibert and/or Clifford. Because Brown put his eggs in Melton's basket, there will be a period where he gets a chance. Maybe he ends up in a platoon, but in my opinion that doesn't happen until a significant period of everyday or nearly everyday play doesn't work.
Clifford and Gilbert didn't set the minors ablaze last season. Brown didn't pick any of them, he decided that Melton would be the best of the 3 after inheriting them...which may not be as high a bar as it seemed a year ago. As for having a chance to "fail" against LHP first I agree, but he would move over to RF in those games. Using RF as a glorified tryout spot is fine if were getting above average overall production in CF.
To me that's fine, I just have no confidence that Brown/ Espada will actually do that. Not to mention I haven't heard anything from anyone besides fans of it actually even being tried/considered.
It’s spring training. That said, seeing Chas get off to this start doesn’t make me feel great about his chances of rebounding. He looked so bad last year.
Cam just cleared the bases off the top of the wall. Can we go ahead and put him on the opening roster, have him compete for ROY and maybe get an extra 1st rd pick? He already hits better than most of our starting lineup.
