I appreciate the breakdown, didn't realize we had that many position players in camp.
That makes sense as dezenzo can get called up if one of the players out of options struggles.

Too bad this new Singleton offers no other positional flexibility.

This is exactly how I see it.

I think Dezenzo would benefit this team as a guy who can play all 4 corner spots and provide a bit of baserunning value. He also has hit RHP in minors and small sample size MLB.

Singleton fills a great need, being able to PH for Meyers, Pena, Dubon, or McCormick vs RHP if the situation called for it, but is severely limited defensively and on the bases.

He only makes it because he is out of options and this team is weak vs RHP.

Singleton needs to have a good spring and hope that we trade him somewhere where a 1b/dh only guy is needed. We are crowded as is on guys that can only play 1b, dh and LF. I don't see any scenario, barring injury, where Singleton gets more than 100-125 at bats per year here. He can't run, not good defensively. Maybe he's gotten into good enough shape to play a passable left field in a pinch? Can't do that here. We have a glut of left fielders now. If he can show that his new physique translates into production, I am thinking of something similar to Eric Thames who went away and came back and caught lightning in a bottle for a few years and crushed 70 homers over a 3 year span...someone might want him.

Yes, but in order for that to happen, someone else needs to step up and take his roster spot.

I don't know how confident I am in the options.

    1) Either Rodgers wins the starting 2b spot making the team even more RH heavy or Guillorme makes it in a platoon with Dubon. I don't see much chance of 2b going any other way.

2)That means that the final spot is between:
    Singleton
    Dezenzo
    Whitcomb
    Hummel
    or
    Salazar

I could see Leon or Trammell rehabbing in AAA and possibly taking the spot if the winner starts slow.

Corona simply hasn't shown enough and Short is too far behind the other 2b candidates to overtake them by opening day IMO.

Miguel Palma roped a solid double off of Cardinals closer Ryan Helsey

Singleton with some nice defensive plays today. Looks quicker out there.....losing 45 pounds will do that.

Wait, am I to believe that Forrest Whitley actually does exist?

This was my take on the pod the other night. As well as LG being a platoon guy with Dubon (and maybe letting Pena sit some against tough RHP for a rest day) as long as Altuve can handle LF.

A this point I will be disappointed if Guillorme doesn’t make the team, unless the Astros really surprise and anoint a young player as a starter at 3B or 2B. Guillorme is just too good of a fit for the roster. If Houston rolls with a Guillorme/Dubon platoon at 2B I predict they will combine for 3+ fwar there. I actually think CF (with Meyers and no real complement to hit against RHP) is the weakest spot in lineup.

I’ve been way out of picket due to travel - is the Arenado trade dead?

No. And don't start believing. The second you believe he exists, he disappears again. The only way we ever get anything out of Whitley this season or ever again is if we all just pretend like he's some random dude who wandered in off the street and as such we expect nothing from him.

That was my exact prediction with a strict platoon- 3 wins.

Best realistic case scenario for Astros by WAR

C-6. Does plays like a 5 win all star and Caratini is good again for 1 WAR
1B- 3 WAR. He keeps doing what hes been doing
2B- 3 War- strict platoon gets to league average offense with gold glove caliber defense as every day
SS- 4 war- Peña gets back his defensive groove when he was a GG w average offense
3B- 4- Paredes hits 35 or 40 HR’s as a dead pull hitter at MMP and continues to walk
LF- 4 war. Altuve catches balls well and is 30 or 40% better than league average at plate
CF- 4 war. Chas is average against RHP and plays average defense/Jake is GG caliber on defense and mashes LHP
RF- 2 mashes lefties and Gammel or someone else is above average against RHP
DH- 6- stays healthy all year and does Yordan things.

Total- 36 War. On the way to winning 105 games as everything plays out well and the Astros are the best team in the league against LHP and top 5 or 7 against RHP as platoons work well for them, Altuve is fine in LF, Yainer becomes a star and Paredes overlay chart becomes HR city at the ice box.
