Gene Hackman, the prolific and versatile two-time Oscar-winning actor whose career spanned five decades, has died at 95 after he and his wife were found dead in their home Wednesday afternoon.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Public Information Officer, Denise Avila, says the couple was found during a welfare check after their neighbor called in concerned about their well-being.

Officials are expected to put out a statement on Thursday morning with more details, officials said.

Gene has quit acting for a decade or longer. I was about to check what he has been doing.

RIP. Hope the Coroner finds something, both bodies found at once. RIP dog as well.

Wow........the man was a legend, but Gene, his wife and dog all died, that's not a coincidence and she looked much younger, as Grendel mentioned, maybe a gas leak or something. From Popeye Doyle to Hoosiers, the man was a legend and then got out and lived a quiet and unassuming life.

great film. His resume is legendary, but he should've gotten a least an Oscar nod for playing Royal.

RIP to Gene and his family.

Too many great movies to list.

I have imitated this scene word-for-word for people. Always get laughs. I tell my audience, "Yeah, you need to see the movie. At least see that scene."

Just the moment Hackman's blind man pulls the needle off the phonograph playing the background sad-pathetic music ("Ave Maria") is still worth at least big grin, 50 years after the fact.

Gene Hackman was one of those guys that looked old at an early age and then basically stopped ageing so by the 1990's it was tough to tell how old he was. It was easy to forget that he was almost 100 years old.

He met his wife when he was 22 years old and he was 54 years old.

He married her in 1991 and supposedly moved into seclusion.

They remained together for over 40 years - but that had to be difficult on her as he became old.

Hopefully it wasn't a double suicide situation.

Rest in Peace to the great Gene Hackman, a very talented and prolific actor. Some all-time great works. Sad to hear about his family. It's a D&D discussion, and don't agree with suicide, but no need to take a pet if that's the case.

You guessed it right, pills were found according to NY Post.

    2 dogs outside survived.

What an awesome actor and RIP. This story is getting crazier by the hours. I saw somewhere that they had been dead at minimum a day? No idea how true that is but both of them and a dog around the same time is very odd. Apparently the front door was wide open and they were found in different parts of the house. I wonder if the dog ate some of those pills? What a odd sequence of events that has a million questions.
