Reed from day 1 was a better defender than Castle and ultimately he'll be a far better shooter. I get your goal may be to **** on Sheppard, but check Castle's numbers, he's absolutely awful despite being given all the opportunity in the world
It's not about age, it's about ability. And if you LOOK at what you see on the floor, he doesn't show anything on either side of the ball. He's getting blown by on defense and he's not producing on the offense.
Ime gave him a defining role. He was getting a consistent 10 mins off the bench. And that's what most on here do not get. He gave him an OPPORTUNITY and he did not take advantage of it. When Reed was on the floor, it was as if the Rockets were playing 4 against 5, NO defense and NO offense. Ime is trying to win but at the same time, give Reed PT. Reed just was not producing.
No clue, but it's pretty common these days. I know why certain people do it, and I'm not going to disrespect you by lumping you in with them. My point was that despite how it looks due in large part to how the situation has been mismanaged, his numbers on defense are very solid and his shooting numbers will come around if he's ever given consistent minutes.... and not in a situation where the coach is looking for any excuse to pull him for aging scrubs. For example, despite the narratives, take a look at the numbers, Sheppard has a weak -0.1 VORP due to the shooting percentages.... now look at Castle, -0.8.... because he's awful on both ends of the court. That's not just one cherry picked number, the rest tell the same story. FFS Castle and Sheppard have nearly the same number of win shares, which is a compilation metric, despite nearly 900 fewer minutes played. Volume is much easier to see than quality sometimes.
If only we gave Sheppard 10 more minutes per game....we would've had Steph Curry. --look I'm Bobby- https://stathead.com//basketball/ve...layer_id2=sheppre01&p2yrfrom=2025&p2yrto=2025
So, you are saying there is no hope he will ever become a good NBA player as he gets older? If we can’t trade him, should we just cut him now and move on?
My one problem with Reed on offense is that he doesn’t move around enough. I watch him set himself in one area of the 3 point line and he just plants himself there, the defenders easily remove him from being an option on offense by cutting off passes to him. And if he does happen to get the ball, they easily defend him because he let everyone know where he was. There is no stealth to his offensive repertoire he’s shown so far. Reed reminds me of watching a game of HORSE, since he lets everyone know where he’s going to shoot his next shot. I can’t imagine Reed is that out of touch, and I expect his IQ is superior to that. So that baffles me, is it that he is sticking to the game plan? If so, the coaching is putting him in a position to fail. I can understand setting someone on the 3 point line set to shoot if the said player is 6’8” or 6’10”…. But why would you do that with a guy who is 6’2” or 6’3”? He’s going to get blocked with little effort! He shows some dog in him on defense. He can get some steals and good positioning. Of course the super athletes of the NBA will exploit his physical weaknesses; especially his lack of strength and shorter height. Though he can’t get taller, he definitely can bulk up! But bulking up negatively affects shooting! And for anyone harping of Reed’s shooting. If he is building his strength in the weight room, his shot will be significantly off until he calibrates his new added muscles to his shooting touch. Hence if the shooting is down, have y’all noticed if he is getting bigger and stronger? Maybe that is the answer why his field goal percentage is so bad right now.
Camping at one spot on the court is not on the player. It's on the coach. I'm not a Reed apologist and never expected him to get on the court this year, but blaming him for being static on the court is pretty ridiculous.
Yeah, Jabari also doesn't move much off ball. The only guy who understands moving without the ball is Amen, Tari and Brooks maybe a little bit. I'm not sure if it's coaching or player IQ. But the coaches definitely could teach the kids about off ball movement.
I address that same concern in paragraph 2 of the post. Reed doesn’t strike me as low IQ. So I too am assuming it’s the coaching that is telling him to stick there; hence putting him in a position to fail. His low shooting % is perhaps him getting on the weight bulking up, in order to be closer to Fred level man-strength. The shooting will recalibrate to his added strength eventually, but it will take time a perhaps an offseason. Even Green’s shooting percentage took a hit because he got stronger and he puts effort in defense. Energy is not unlimited, there is an opportunity cost. Tired muscles equal lower shooting percentages; until the player can calibrate accordingly.
Nah. I remain convinced he's the most recent incarnation of Basketballholic and whatever his previous handle was. Same terrible takes, delivered with condescension and arrogance. Never fails to get a laugh or two.
Ask him if Terrence Jones contributed to the Houston Rockets and you’ll be in for a rollercoaster of emotions. The guy literally cannot accept the fact that Terrence Jones was on the team. Completely delusional person.
I would categorize myself as optimistic on Reed, so don't take this as hate toward him, I just dislike the excuse in general. Adding strength doesn't happen overnight. Reed would have to lock himself in a weight room for months without ever picking up a basketball to have it negatively affect his shot in any measurable way.
i think it's fairly obvious that the coaching staff has been wholely tasked to build a defensive juggernaut, and give little attention to the offensive side of the ball save minimizing turnovers by eating clock and iso heavy offense. As a strategy for a young team, it has some merit and has paid dividends. It is frustrating for fans to wait for a more balanced team capable of making noise in the playoffs. Hopefully, the FO and coaching will have a more balanced approach in the off-season and next year. As far as this season goes, it will be telling how Ime handles the return of FVV and whether he progresses the idea of FVV off the ball or will he go back to the more conservative approach.
