There are several option for ripping CDs using WMA variable bitrate For example, I can rip Cd's using 85 to 145 kbps, 135 to 215 kbps, or a couple of other options. When I have WMP 10 set to rip at 85 to 145 kbps (which I would not normally pick), it rips at 135 to 215 kbps (which is what I want). When I have it set to rip at 135 to 215, it rips at the next step up, which is 240 to 355 kbps. Anyone else experience this? Anyone mind ripping a CD using WMA variable bitrate to see if it does the same for you?

Please, none of those "Switch to iTunes" or "Use AAC instead of WMA" comments, as helpful as they are. :)

I did what you asked, and indeed it ripped two songs I designated from my "Maná - Revolución De Amor" CD to 310 and 315 bitrate.

Strange, but true. May I ask why would that be a problem? I don't rip with WMP, but now that I found I can keep my CDs on my machine, I will. ;)

What I want to know is, how do I stop the f#*()%^@$&* program from making new folders for each artist for each album? That's just INSANE. I want all MyMusic in the same folder (MyMusic).

It's not a big deal, but it seems to me that they would have fixed that before the official release of WMP 10. I also put audio books and things like that on my computer. I switch to a lower bitrate to rip audio books (48 kbps works fine for them), and I've forgetten about this little quirk several times when switching back.

I believe all the folders are created so that Windows Media Player can sort by artist and album under the "Library" tab. I think its pretty handy. Most music players will do that kind of thing, including MusicMatch and iTunes.

they should at least give an option to NOT make folders automatically. But then again, I will just find the files and pile 'em up into c:\MyMusic, 'cuz that's how I like it. So what are you going to do about the bitrate? Live with it, or go with some other program?

You can change the settings somewhere I believe.... Each time you rip a CD, you can tell it where to rip to... Or maybe I'm thinking of some of the other media players I've used in the past year....

And as far as the media library, the library sorts by the information it's given. It can get that info from an online database if you tell it to. Otherwise you can go in there and manually edit the info. Creating new folders is just its default programming.

I know you can change which folder you put your music in (i.e., instead of MyMusic, you could put your music in another folder), but I don't believe WMP gives you the option of doing so without creating folders for artists and albums within that folder. I guess I'm fortunate I like that feature.

I think they may have fixed it. I just ripped Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's Dances from Renaissance to Nutcracker and the bitrate matched the setting this time. I knew they would eventually fix it, so I wasn't going to change. For my purposes, WMP 10 does fine. I like being able to choose between music stores and other services (there are now twelve different services available within WMP 10). I have a Rio Nitrus, so I can't use iTunes even if I wanted to. I regret that my Nitrus doesn't work with Audible (one of the twelve services available within WMP 10), but that's okay. When it comes to speech, I don't have a problem rerecording it (using Nero or Cakewalk or whatever) in a non-digital rights managed format that I can put on my Nitrus. I don't like doing that with music, since you lose some quality. But I suspect it's okay for audio books.
