How long before Van Gundy trims the roster to 12 players? And how long before he gives up on the comb over and shaves those few hairs in the middle of his balding scalp!
yao, dikembe taylor, howard, weatherspoon, padget jim jackson, nachbar, bowen mcgrady, sura, gaines lue, ward thats 14 players.. and sura on injured list so thats 13.. if he wants to add hawkins.. we need 2 more players off
Something tells me that Gaines might have a season-ending papercut before November and have to spend a few months on IR. That or Spoon may end up developing a sprained forehead.
Hawkins would be easy to pick up again so he's an easy cut. Gaines would probably find a home somewhere else due to his potential.
Am I going insane here or has everyone forgotten that the rosters are 15 deep this season? The league finally dealt with the hypocrisy of the IR and just extended the rosters, right?
I think you are right GutterSnipe. I read that a number of times as well No more Injured Reserve List
They don't have to make up injuries any longer. The NBA allows teams to keep 12 active roster members and up to 3 reserves, injured or otherwise.
Most of those players probably have clauses in the contracts that they signed saying they won't relaly get played unless the play in X number of games. If that is not the case, they are not making that much money becuase they are all free agents and dno't have a set amount that they must really be paid like when your drafted. The minimum is really low on them and it could come in handy to have these players around if you do have an injury.
Every team will. The salary cap will be the same. It will just be extra bodies that make the minimum will be active and not out with faked injuries ("earaches" "back spasms" "flu-like symptoms") like in years past.
Crisco and Sam, yes but, I agree we will need somebody to fill in for injured players. But lets face it, they will be scrubs. Why pay a scrub for an entire year when you can get a fill in as needed. That is what 10 day contracts are for. Now if you want to keep a player and try to develope him for a year, but not give up a roster space I could understand. Darko Milosovich of last year comes to mind. But I don't think we have a player like that. We are just not THAT deep. And JVG tends to play a short rotation.
Of course they will be scrubs. They usually are. But anyway, even it were feasible to sign somebody to a new 10 day deal all season (which its not, I think you can only sign them to two in one season), it would make no difference as it would amount to the minimum salary anyway, I believe. It makes no difference - the rockets paid the guys on IR from last year, they'll keep 15 this year. An extra veteran minimum salary isn't going to break the bank or put them in luxury tax territory.
plus knowing the routines of the team throughout the year makes these players better than 10day ones. shortly put.
That is a good point. And Sam is corect, two 10 day contracts is all the team can offer a player without making it a year long contract. But three players. Why would you pay three players for a full year when you can pick up the pieces as you need them. I don't mind paying one guy who is beeing groomed for something, or to cover a place where we may be very thin or susceptable to injury. But personally, unless I am sending a ship to Mars, I'm hard pressed to pay for tripple redundancy on something so minor.
I'd much rather have 3 "know their role" scrubs on my bench who've practiced with the team all year and know the playing tendencies of their teammates than try to scramble at the last second and pick someone up (assuming anyone worthwhile is available) who has never played with the team before. I don't know. Sounds like common sense to me.
