This is the cost of freeing up money on last year's cap space. We are managing the hits coming over the next couple of years so we can keep some very good players.
While I loved having Diggs on the team the friggin cap hit is horrid, if you're going to have that much dead money then sign him back....do you want to just have $19 million on the books or use that money to shore up a weakness...............I don't get it, maybe they know something we don't because from a business standpoint this makes ZERO sense....................ZERO, now we have just over 2 million in cap space, sure we will probably maneuver to get more but this is a bad look, and we lost a second rounder, it's easy to play Monday morning QB but come on, you could have made it decent by signing him back
IIRC restructuring Nico ($10.5) & Hunter ($14.7) with void years can free up over $25M. I think we will figure it out. I also think the injury to Diggs ended what the Texans were trying to do and they prolly had an understanding on a new deal IF he didn't get injured
610AM guys a few weeks ago mentioned Diggs pretty much disappeared after he got injured. He wasn't around the team..didn't show up to NRG..practices, meetings, games. etc. and they made it seem like the front office was turned off by that. They said Diggs, Pitre, and other players that have had season ending injuries usually stuck around. I don't know how much insider knowledge they have or if they're just being presumptuous.
The key is to stop looking like the money is freed up when it's just shifted into the future and at a cost. We know we'll need the space in the future and there is a limit to how far you can go. I think the decision to bring it forward was made last season. After last years binge in FA, we are back to prove it value contracts.
Agreed, BTW, I was certainly on board with what they did last offseason. Too bad Diggs didn't workout. They could create more cap space if they started structuring their contracts like the Eagles do.
Pretty funny trying to search contract updates yesterday only for SI and every outlet covering Digg's Pizza Deliveries to Cardi B.
Didnt we have him for 3 years at like 16 mil per? And instead we combined it all in to 1 year, paid him 20 mil, and now stuck with 16.7 more mil? I know I don't understand Void years, but I thought that when it happened this was regarded as a Diggs-First move to keep him happy and no one said anything about cap savings back then.. Would have rather just kept him all 3 years. Did him a solid and now we're stuck and he gets to go and make more money.
The cap was spread out, not the cash. He got his $ up front, then spread part of the cap to this year to open up cap space for last year. But we have too much space needed over the next couple of years. No doubt some will also be spread into the future, but we still want the flexibility a bit longer.
I see, ok that makes more sense. Still wish we signed him then and had the money going towards something.
Diggs plays the whole season then maybe the trade and salary shuffling are worth it. Who knows, maybe we make it to AFCC. On the flip side. What if him playing masks Slowik issues? Stroud and OL issues still there, but then we don’t fire Slowik. I think I’d trade the 2nd rounder for half a season of Diggs and moving on from Slowik.
I understand. It was a great move if we made it to the Super Bowl. It's not hindsight that we took on a big financial hit that will hamper us in this year's free agency AND gave up a 2nd round draft pick. But maybe I'm misunderstanding something, which is certainly probable.
I agree, we simply didn't have enough firepower, Diggs and Tank IMO would have made a world of difference.........................dam it, we can dream cant we Injuries happen to everyone but dam, our 2nd and 3rd best receivers and then the drop off to X and Metchie and Woods was too much to overcome
I'm hoping they bring in a couple of dynamic WR's Demarcus Robinson already knows the system and Eijah Moore who plays the slot but can also play outside. Then draft a developmental guy in rd 4 or 5. That would help remake the WR room. All they need to do after this is find a quality TE in the draft and CJ will have the weapons he needs to succeed.
Absolutely open to the concept. That was more semantical thing. No one was surprised. We’ll have dialogue with all our players who are free agents. There will be players we re-sign, players who leave, players who want to see their market. A lot of discussion back & forth. We enjoyed having Stef in the building. Door is always open. We never rule anything out. Things will pick up over the next few weeks and then we’ll have a good idea about what the market looks like. — Nick on 610
