The Ukrainians surprised everyone by pushing the Russians back which provided time for American diplomacy to coordinate an international response, arm Ukraine, expand NATO, and as much as possible, isolate Russia economically. That was not an easy set of tasks. As for Israel, a lot of folks were assuming the Middle East would see multiple Arab/Muslim countries go to war with Israel, but again, deft American diplomacy kept a lid on things. Whether those were the right calls and the best options has yet to be seen, but at the time, there's a strong argument that they were indeed the best of bad choices.
