My 12 year old is an absolute freak when it comes to studying all things sports. He asked Golden online a week ago what he thought about Houston and he said he’d love to stay here. So even after going to UT, he’s all about the H.
I think Jarrett Patterson was a great pick considering that we got him in the 6th round, but I am skeptical that he will ever be one of the top-16 centers in the league. I also think that Juice Scruggs was picked way too high and that he is, at BEST, a fair backup. Blake Fisher was, to me, disappointing as a rookie but maybe he'll be better this season. Nick's record at picking OL is poor - so far.
In the 6th rd Patterson was a steal. I'm looking forward to seeing how Caserio/Caley/Popovich handle FA. It will be nice to have everybody on the same page finally. What I hope they dont do is draft 1 OL and run it back with the other 4 OL. But yeah, Extending Mason/Howard and drafting Scruggs was a big mistake.
Seems like a smart way to go about their business. I'm still hoping they draft 1 OL high in the draft.
This is exactly how I'd approach it, as well. You need plug-n-play, veteran OL; not rookies. That's a bad recipe. Very few rookie offensive linemen step in and play great. They are going against uber-elite athletes, with moves and techniques they've never seen, and certainly never seen with such speed and strength, while trying to learn a new system and solidifying fundamentals that have probably gotten rusty because they've been so much better than their competition. Nope; not for me. I want them to break the bank for free agent IOL.
I have to disagree with Jordan in that Nick doesn't care in the slightest that Colston was a 4-star recruit.
It's a running gag on BDN's modus operandi while in Houston. 4 star recruits. Team Captains. Power 4 conference plus injury history. Hit on all 4 and you have a Nick special
