Yes, that's just over 26 per year, but at 31 years old it's very realistic, especially if he has a big year. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he has a big year and opts out that Boston would extend him with something like that, or more. I HATE that he is gone. I understand the Crane business model and laugh when people call him cheap, cause he isn't But I hate that we only have 2 people left from the first championship and one of them hasn't been able to play much for years. That $40M should be looked at as more like $30M. So he will really need >$140M/5yrs to beat the Tigers offer. Not that it really changes your point, but the deferrals are a big factor when analyzing these deals.
They are big for fans and for front offices. For players it only matters what the headline says. Thats how they view their salary and how they are compared to their peers and historical players.
I will be flabbergasted if by the second year of this deal Boston fans/front office are still happy with the signing. Bro is going to have a target on his head by mid year if he gets off to his normal start. Boston media is not as forgiving as Houston’s.
So the deferral amount may be paid out immediately after the 3 years is up. If he's still with the team and signs a new contract I wonder how that would work? Maybe they'd restructure it somehow
The Astros have had quite a run in these past 10 years… Ever since their surprise 2015 matchup with the Royals…. it’s been playoffs each season with the lone exception 2016 when they missed out because the Rangers had the Astros # Bregman fulfilled his role for the Astros, he played hard, he played like a star, he constantly made adjustments to stay relevant, he always stayed professional and keen to the needs of the team. So absolutely no hard feelings for him, at the same point I’ll keep an eye on his career, but I’m definitely not going to hate on the fella for using Free agency to go to a place he wanted to be at. It’s sucks we break up the duo of Altive and Bregman, but that’s MLB economics 2000.
So, Knox chose Boston over Houston. Of course he did, his last name starts with B and his first name rhymes with Sox. Why do you think his dad even chose that name? Seriously, like Alex said, he was drafted by the Red Sox out of high school. His dad grew up sitting on Ted Williams' lap. He has probably wanted to play for them his entire life. He had a great run in Houston and there is really nothing more for him to accomplish. Bregman would probably not make the HOF if he stayed in Houston and continued with his recent stats & trajectory, even if he won one more Championship. He has 3 great years in Boston and wins a WS and his legacy really is changed. Like Boras said, the guy has an outrageous 1.200 OPS in Fenway. Not many were calling him a cheater during the free agent courting process. That's really all it takes to distance himself from it. In all likelihood, Bregman will fall short of the Hall just like Springer & Correa who also chose to move on from the Astros. It is Jose Altuve left alone to carry the burden & weight of the cheating scandal even though, as we know, he was not a participant. It is Jose who will wear his Astros cap to his induction ceremony in Cooperstown.
I have no doubt that Alex knows he's getting $31.7M year. He will make $20M this year, and by the time he gets the other $20 it will only he worth what $11.7M would buy today. I'm saying that the fact that he can say he's making $40M per year is a big big deal to most players. And many many, maybe most players would choose $40M per year w/ $20M of it deferred until after retirement over $31.7M now
Man...I'm a big fan of Bregman, but that's stretching it into the unrealistic realm. Not impossible, but most definitely improbable.

Meanwhile, Boston was attractive for other reasons. Bregman’s wife got accepted to Harvard Extension School early last week, perhaps swaying his decision. She’s entering an entrepreneurial business program that requires her to be on campus for several weeks. She’s also seven months pregnant and due at the end of April.

Perfect example of these players being more than just baseball players. They're not immune from real-world factors just like the rest of us. Something like this is a big deal (really cool for her) and makes sense that they'd want to be in Boston. Not that it was the only factor, but sounds like it was a big one. Cant' really blame him at all for his decision.
And let's not dismiss his agent wanting to be able to tell everyone he landed the $40M/year contract. Boras was almost certainly in his ear, telling him this was the best offer.
