here's what I'm working on today for in-house counsel. I think the Biden administration didn’t do itself any favors when it added all the “DEI this-and-that" tags to routine grant applications. Dumb move if you ask me.

Plus these DEI requirements have added tremendously to the cost of monitoring those efforts in research and have distracted from doing the actual work. There’s no actual work being done with any of these add-ons--just more moral grandstanding and virtue signaling. Like I've said before, universities and lefties have brought all of this (well, most of it anyway) upon themselves.

So politically one of the biggest vulnerabilities for DEI work is how expensive it has been. Part of what's at stake with the "indirect costs" NIH controversy. I do think the DEI work could be done more usefully and more cost-effectively without the excessive government monitoring and oversight that adds enormous costs to doing basic research.

The searchable database is HERE . You can see grant amounts, tags, institutions/awardees, and study titles among other things.

Cruz-Led Investigation Uncovers $2 Billion in Woke DEI Grants at NSF, Releases Full Database

WASHINGTON, D.C -- U.S. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-Texas) released a database identifying over 3,400 grants, totaling more than $2.05 billion in federal funding awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) during the Biden-Harris administration. This funding was diverted toward questionable projects that promoted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) or advanced neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda.

    Sen. Ted Cruz said,

“Over the past few weeks, the Trump administration has been taking a sledgehammer to the radical left’s woke nonsense. DEI initiatives have poisoned research efforts, eroded confidence in the scientific community, and fueled division among Americans. I am proud to release our investigation’s database, which exposes how the Biden administration weaponized federal agencies to push a far-left ideology. Congress must end the politicization of NSF funding and restore integrity to scientific research.”

The database served as the backbone for Sen. Cruz’s October 2024 investigative report, which revealed how the Biden administration politicized scientific research. The report discovered multiple extreme research projects that were spearheaded by professors who were also promoting antisemitic protests on college campuses.

Recognizing the harmful, discriminatory practices done in the name of DEI initiatives advanced by the Biden administration, President Trump signed an Executive Order requiring all agencies and departments to immediately terminate all DEI programs, offices, and positions.

NSF immediately froze its annual grant review to incorporate President Trump’s directives and announced the review of all funding activities and services to ensure compliance. Chairman Cruz has requested significant scrutiny of awards listed in the database.

You think O's is dumb? You might not agree with his political stance but he's far from that. I don't agree with @DaDakota but I know he's not dumb. That's an unfair label to put on someone. @fchowd0311 is. He just hates everything

So now self-driving cars are "woke"? Musk, you are so fked.

Solar eclipses are woke? Protein is woke? God, you are so... I can’t go there.

Go to USAspending.gov and search for "women." Apparently, they’re all part of the "woke" agenda.

The political "anti-woke" movement has gone off the rails. It’s reached the absurdity of the Salem witch trials.

    https://www.npr.org/2025/02/13/nx-s...nce-includes-self-driving-cars-solar-eclipses

"For just a few minutes, it feels like the whole world stands still and yet everything changes," says Corinne Brevik, a physicist at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The sky darkens, stars come out as the blaze of the sun's corona becomes visible. "It reminds me that we are all part of something so much bigger than ourselves."

But only a sliver of the country gets this firsthand view. For the 2024 eclipse, Brevik used money from a National Science Foundation grant to help middle schoolers host a live, interactive broadcast that brought together kids within the path of totality with those around the country outside the path. It meant thousands of students could share the experience.

"You can literally watch the kids watching the eclipse and hear that moment of 'Whoa!' " she says. "It got a lot of kids who wouldn't necessarily have had a chance to see it out to observe."

On Tuesday, Brevik was surprised to learn that her grant was one of over 3,400 NSF grants labeled by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, as "woke DEI" research that may be advancing "neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda."

"It's frustrating," says Brevik. "The sole goal was to share what's happening with everybody. It's not propaganda; there's no background agenda. Our goal is to help educate our youth."

Brevik was one of many scientists expressing dismay at how their basic research was being labeled.

The list included projects aimed at finding better ways of synthesizing new medications; studying how to make self-driving vehicles safer; investigating how military service could help more women pursue science careers; figuring out why some proteins start to malfunction in ways that can lead to cancer.

"It's ludicrous," says Joshua Weitz, a biologist at the University of Maryland whose research was not flagged but who has received NSF grants. "[Cruz] is using his position as a senator to make a big noise about fundamental research and mis-categorizing what's going on in the research and technology sector in this country. If one looks at this list, you find things that we should absolutely be proud of funding."

Many of the research proposals that seem wholly unrelated to DEI were likely flagged because they included language about broadening the participation of women and underrepresented groups in science, Weitz says, something that Congress has mandated NSF consider in its grantmaking since the 1990s.

Daddy Trump has given permission to his minions to use the word WOKE on everything they hate. Even though they don't even know what it really means. It's corny y'all.

Okkkkayyy.... instead of just using the term "Woke" why don't you actually tell us exactly what those grants were used for, and where the Biden administration broke the law, or was fraudulent with the money spent??

This is also why the "50 million billion trillion Dollars for Condoms for the Taliban... err I mean Hamas.... errrggg!!!!" lies affect things. Now we have no way of knowing if this is just a political smear lie like the condoms for Hamas thing, or if there was an actual fraudulent occurrence that took place at the direction of Joe Biden.

Tell me the facts. Tell me the laws.... then I'll care. I DO NOT CARE about whatever grandstanding woke this woke that crap that Ted Cruz blabs on about.

@Os Trigonum .... since you follow, and are a supporter of Ted Cruz, maybe you could enlighten us on what precisely this means, and what laws were broken?

He does but the statement here and examples does not actually cite fraud, or laws that were broken. He merely gives examples of money spent on things Ted Cruz does not politically agree with, or grants that were given where there are people involved who have said things that Ted Cruz does not politically agree with.

So I'm just confused here about what laws were broken or where there was fraud. Since Os obviously is a fan of Ted Cruz, I'm just wondering if he can educated us stupid woke liberals cucks.

To be fair he isn't alleging fraud, he is alleging waste.

Edit: the debate is are these projects beneficial to science

I think you mistook the tone of OPs commentary, and then called yourself a stupid woke liberal cuck which is rough, but at least it is Valentine’s Day.

white supremacy in physics education . . .

And to be clear, I believe that this kind of work on systemic obstacles to minority success in STEM fields is really, really important. My problem is with how all of this get framed. And clearly the framing makes it very easy for politicians like Ted Cruz to grandstand about it all.

Without going into depth of any of this, I can only say I am not in favor of qualitative studies unless they are used to help create a qualitative framework for actually setting up empirical findings. Race is so hard to study unless you have scale and can control for a ton of variables. But there is enough to justify the research into race and how it impacts interactions.
