Should be noted that it's the detection rate, not the autism iself. In the past, it's far morely likely that autism would be underdiagnosed.

Well I did say that Autism education, awareness, and acceptance, better diagnostic procedures and changes in diagnostic criteria has helped diagnose more children on the spectrum. Even with all that being said, Trump's statistics of then and now were so ridiculously false that it's plain ignorance or blatantly misleading info coming from a President. Saying 1 in 10,000 twenty years ago when it was 1 in 125 is absurd.

You also have to consider the broad range of children on the spectrum, from severe to highly functioning, and that only a few of the children on the spectrum have servant capabilities like in the 1988 movie Rainman. I've worked with thousands of students on the spectrum, and each is unique in their own way. Even many nonverbal children have special skills that amazed me. I loved working with them.

It used to be more of the nonverbal ones who were diagnosed first, often because they weren't talking at 2 or 3 years of age, and often parents stayed a bit more in denial before seeking professional testing.

Teachers, doctors, speech pathologists, and other professionals have far more autism training now, and are often the first to initiate testing. The higher functioning children were often not diagnosed in the past. I'm sure plenty of kids I went to school with would have been on the spectrum back when they didn't even have Special Education in regular schools, and nobody even heard of autism. They could have been called brilliant, slow, odd, problem kids, shy, or plenty of other things that just made them different from others.

Even 20 years ago parents, caretakers, and families often just dismissed a child's lack of verbal skills, social skills, or frustrations with change, difference in social settings as being shy, stubborn, a slow talker, or other things. Denial of it being something to seek professional opinions on was common, especially with young children, and many doctors back then didn't ring any alarm bells when they only saw children a few minutes for typical illnesses and checkups.

There's just so many resources now on the Internet available for parents to detect many of the common signs of children on the spectrum. It's not always obvious, but there are things to look for.

Early prevention really helps children adjust and learn in school, and helps parents accommodate for their child at home and in public. Even little things like certain fabrics, foods, smells, or sounds can be extremely irritating or repulsive for a child with highly sensitive reactions to senses. Knowing those things can make a difference. It's not always just a child being cranky or stubborn, and when a child can't speak it leads to frustration.

The adults are Darwin Award winners. The sad part is the kids that didn’t have a choice.

That's the really sad part. I feel sorry for children who grow up in homes where parents put their child's health at more risk, simply because of their personal, political, or religious beliefs, or ignorance.

I feel the same way about all those children who have parents driving home from parties after drinking, with the kids in the car, even if they say think they are fine to drive. When I was a kid children's birthday parties were different than what I see now. What used to be punch, sodas, Kool-Aid, cake, and cupcakes seems to have morphed into a bunch of adults partying alongside the kids with coolers of beers.

The Conservative Rights war against science is so troubling. I guess if you believe in sky fairies that tell you to be a good person or you are going to hell and are still are judgmental pricks and assholes, then it shouldn't be surprising.

This is like 1984 and Animal Farm but my son said that it banned book in some schools now.

I have no idea what this quack is going to do as HHS Secretary. Maybe he'll just enjoy a cigar? Maybe he's involved in backdoor deals to enrich himself. Or maybe he genuinely believes the vaccine is evil. Maybe he'll go after the pharmaceutical industry as evil doers. Maybe unconventional treatments will become mainstream. Maybe there will even be more regulations on everything, from the pharma industry to food packaging. Guess we'll find out soon....

What is 'Make America Healthy Again?' What to Expect with RFK Jr.'s Confirmation - Newsweek

Within the first 100 days of the executive order, the commission will complete an assessment that will:

    • Compare childhood chronic disease in America compared to other countries.
    • Assess how overuse of medications, certain food ingredients, chemicals and environmental exposures contribute to chronic inflammation and disease.
    • Evaluate the prevalence and risks of prescribing antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants and weight-loss drugs to children.
    • Identify best practices for preventing childhood health issues through proper nutrition and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
    • Assess the effectiveness of educational programs related to nutrition, physical activity and mental health for children.
    • Review existing federal programs and funding aimed at preventing and treating childhood health issues for their scope and effectiveness.
A key component of the commission is an effort to promote healthier lifestyles and preventive medicine. Kennedy has previously advocated for dietary changes, reduced exposure to processed foods and stricter regulations on pollutants linked to illness.

Kennedy also has a history of lawsuits against vaccine manufacturers, which has fueled skepticism about his ability to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Over the years, he has repeatedly questioned vaccine safety and taken legal action against pharmaceutical companies, alleging harmful effects linked to immunizations. While he has tempered some of his rhetoric in recent months, critics remain wary, arguing that his past legal battles and public statements have sown doubt about widely accepted public health measures.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who leads the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, required assurances that Kennedy would not alter existing vaccine recommendations before agreeing to support his confirmation, according to The Associated Press.

About HHS: The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services.

This one's outside of rfk jr and maga land. Could be vaccine hesitancy or maybe an isolated community.

    My brother had undiagnosed autism.

We just thought he was really quirky - that he struggled with some very basic things but was working for the pentagon by his mid 20's.

He was diagnosed last year and it has really helped him and his family understand him.

They meet in March because it's a 6-month production cycle (for Sept). Perhaps they can get DODGE involved to reduce it to a two-week production cycle.

F.D.A. Cancels Meeting of Vaccine Experts Scheduled to Advise on Flu Shots
The cancellation plays into fears among scientists who worry that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will use his position as health secretary to sow doubts about vaccines.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/us/politics/fda-flu-vaccine.html

The F.D.A. sent an email to members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee on Monday afternoon informing them of the cancellation, according to a senior official familiar with the decision. There was no reason given. The panel was to meet March 13.

“It’s a six-month production cycle,” Dr. Offit said. “So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.”

Richard Hughes, a lawyer for some vaccine makers, said the postponement was concerning since the schedule for making the flu vaccine tends to be quite strict. Strains are usually selected in the F.D.A. meeting in February or March using data from the World Health Organization — a relationship the United States walked away from early in the Trump administration. He said manufacturing tends to begin in June.

“The stakes are incredibly high,” he said, noting that this year’s flu season has been especially intense.

According to the C.D.C., 86 children and 19,000 adults have died from flu this winter season. About 430,000 people were hospitalized. In June, a C.D.C. committee tends to decide whether to advise use of the vaccine, which sets in motion insurance and government coverage of the vaccines, Mr. Hughes said.
