If he wasn’t signing with the Astros, he wanted to go to a baseball city. Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs were the teams he had Boras reach out to. He reached out directly to Cubs.

Cubs were not willing to give him the length or money he wanted. Ultimately once Red Sox could defer money in exchange for opt outs, they worked out a deal with Boras.

Astros didn’t want to cross 30 and certainly not 40. They have known for awhile that there were a couple offers hard for Alex to pass up.

Boras came through for Bregman. I don’t think any other agent gets 3/120 (deferred) with opt outs for a guy that wasn’t hot on the market.

Bregman did want to stay in Houston. He got over $10,000,000 MORE a year from the Red Sox.

The Red Sox clearly caved at the last minute. They’ll be looking to move Yoshida now, even if they have to pay a lot of his salary.

75 RBIs, but yes it's beyond ridiculous

But he'll likely get past the $156 million mark after his next 6 seasons, so monetarily he wins.

So if the news of playing Bregman at 2B, leaving Devers at 3B is true, who the hell pays a second baseman $40 million dollars?

Bregman is definitely the superior defender at 3rd so that would be a mistake.

It is a compromise between the GM and manager. The GM has a longer term plan, and 3/120 doesn’t hinder his plan and 3/120 makes the fans and manager happy.

I doubt it has any chance of happening but I wish the Astros would get involved with Yoshida if the Red Sox pay down his deal.

I am also curious to see if now Brown is able to talk Crane into Pivetta or another arm. Brown has wanted pitching all along. He didn’t stick his neck out to get more money for Bregman.

Agreed about Breslow and Cora finding an amenable compromise regarding Bregman. Also, you can never have too much pitching, but Brown has to address the outfield, too. I wouldn’t mind Yoshida as the left-handed bat who can play left field or designated hitter if the Red Sox pay enough of his salary to make his annual AAV around 10M. I also will not be surprised if they circle back with St. Louis about Nolan Arenado or someone like Lars Nootbaar or Brendan Donovan.

I’ll be interested to see what the Astros plan B is because they need another starting-caliber bat and a good leverage reliever like David Robertson would also be very helpful.

Finally, Pivetta signed with San Diego for 4 years, 55 million tonight.

He got a very creative contract structure, too. 3 million signing bonus, 1 million salary this year, 19 million in year two, 18 million in year 3 and 14 million in year four. He has opt outs after the second and third seasons.

Anyways Boston can have him at that price. I think he's going to decline pretty bad.

This appears to be empirically and objectively false.

copium? I had no interest in resigning Bregman for the 150 offer... at around $28 per. Small market teams can't afford to be sentimental on past accomplishments to clearly declining players way past prime. Pujols post 30 performance crippled Angels.

This is an overpay by a team that can't attract marquee FA's after they blundered big time with betts. But 3 years over 120 isn't some great win for Bregman. His next contract could easily be 3/45.

Everyone is a small market team compared to NYC and LA teams. Chicago and Boston will always bring in revenue no matter how bad they are.Astros have done well with revenue due to past decade of success, but it depends on deep playoff runs. They can't have a roster of bloated underperformers like Rodon and Stanton make FA signings/give out contract extensions. They've stayed in the game because they didn't cripple themselves overpaying Springer, Correa (both underperformers post Stros) and bregman. Think like a GM--not a fan.
