It’s not exactly true. First, it was reported we upped the offer. No one knows exactly exactly how much but let’s assume it’s 5/160 (probably more)

40 vs 32 is 8 million at it would be at least 2 million less if you consider taxes so 6 million per year

then there is a major difference in Cost-of-living. 30-60% higher

when all taken in consideration. It was a couple million dollars more per year net.

You are probably right that if anything happens it would strongly lean towards a clear upgrade over what they have. That said, having Ben Gamel as a fourth outfielder doesn’t make an outfield of Dubon, Meyers and McCormick good enough.

I have no problem with them gambling on McCormick bouncing back based on his track record before last season. I also don’t mind Dubon as a contact hitter in the ninth spot in the lineup in front of Altuve whether he plays second base or the outfield on a given night. But, you can’t both of them starting with Jake Meyers in the same outfield. Someone like Dezenzo, Leon, Melton, Matthews or Cam Smith needs to seize a corner outfield spot sooner rather than later.

Honestly, I’m starting to feel that way, but I appreciate his service here. I can’t say anything negative about the guy.

I hope Brown is able to pivot to continue to improve this team. The outfield looks like ****.

40 Mil is way too high for Bregman but glad he got the bag. It may be rough for him to get a decent contract after the 3rd year. Not sure how the raucous Boston fans will react if Bregman is hitting .200 a couple of months in.

    6 years vs 3 years...

Short high AAV contracts are not a big flex. Correa got one and then signed for lesser than predicted after opting out. Would have been nice if we got more in the Tucker trade, but Luhnow is long gone. As a small market one must be really diligent about not overpaying based on desperation or sentimentality.

This guy bothers me to know end… it was reported by two sources Houston upped the offer. Just because it wasn’t leaked doesn’t mean it wasn’t.

    Lol no, no it isn't

Crane may have went from 6/156 to 6/160, but i'd be SHOCKED if he went from 26 million per year to 32 million per year. That's simply not how Crane operates, he never has. He has what he thinks a player is worth, and he isn't going to increase that by 25% per year because of negotiations with other teams. It's just not how he has EVER done business

Along with the 40 million per year he gets opt outs each year, so if he faces a long term injury the sox are on the hook for that money, baseball is all guaranteed.

The state income tax is greatly overrated in these deals. In Mass it's 5%, thats 2 million per year

So even on a straight dollar to dollar comparison, it's 38 million to 26-27 per year. The opt outs give him a chance to make significantly more long term, with little risk of making less. It's a brilliant deal for Alex, and it's classic Crane contract negotiations, how he has done it for the past decade

Good for Bregman for setting up his family for life in a good American city with great schools.

This was a business decision. It's hard to blame him for taking it. I'm so tired of losing good players to free agency though. Such a waste.

Gamel will likely have more starts in the OF than Dubon. He’s a much better hitter against RHP.

I assume this means we keep Singleton on the roster and he’ll be in the lineup all of the days Yordan is playing LF. The other days he will be available to PH for one of them.

Hopefully Dezenzo steps up as well then you can have him in LF with Gamel in RF when we face RHP.

I think it was Boston all along. Storied franchise. Baseball town. Ballpark is a great fit. Great city. And the huge 40MM AAV was more than anyone saw coming. I’m sad he is gone. He played the market and got where he wanted to go.
