For every one person a steel mill hires, 20 people work for companies that utilize steel as one of their items on their bill of materials in manufacturing their products Protecting one industry to screw over the entire manufacturing industry is funny though.
Imagine if Bernie sanders raised the cost of beer with a policy position. Just Imagine the outrage from MAGA
I read one article that said US steel still lost jobs, just not what was projected and that the US increased its steel imports after the Chinese steel tariffs ... some of which was suspected of being "rebadged" Chinese steel.

They'll happily drink Miller, Coors, and Bud, and relish in the little guy getting squeezed out. They love misdirected anger.
The United States produces about 80 million tons of steel and imports about 28 million tons mostly from Canada and Mexico China barely makes the list
That's because Biden actually increased steel tariffs against China and implemented a bunch of changes to target Chinese backdoor imports of steel via Mexico. China very clearly subsidizes its steel industry and as a result has been dumping steel on the global market for some time. The issue of Chinese steel imports has been a bipartisan topic of concern going back to the Obama administration.
I really believe the speed in which they are doing this with NO transparency to the public or to Congress is because these types of issues will creep into the news more and more and more and by this time next year if Joe Six Pack is buying a head of lettuce for $8.00 then we are going to have a bunch of people who voted for trump to get the AMERICAN economy under control. Personally, I don't think ANY president can snap their fingers and get lower prices at HEB or Shell.............and for some reason no president will actually come out and say that. They can do things to make sure the prices are low such as a smoother supply chain but trump or anyone else is not calling up HEB to say hey, lower your prices. The whole egg issue is bizarre, we have a friggin bird flu epidemic, and millions have HAD to be killed, supply and demand. For those folks who scream at any president that they need to lower the cost is living in a fantasy world....................and for those fringe voters who bought the line that trump would make groceries affordable on day one, well folks, you are just silly but I get it.......we hope the Prez of the USA would be an honorable person but you let the fox in the henhouse and I hate to break it you (and all the cultist in maga) he does not give one flip about you, his god is MONEY
since winning the election last Nov, the convicted felon has been regurgitating his tariff plans effect, The Jan 2025 jobs report came in softer than expected, with 143K jobs added compared to the anticipated 175K. The Jan 2025 CPI jumped 0.5% after gaining 0.4% in December. In the 12 months through January, it increased 3.0% after advancing 2.9% in December.
The most important input in steel and aluminum production is energy. Quebec gets over 90% of its electricity generation from hydro. Their entire grid is renewable and most importantly it's far cheaper than anywhere in the US. As a result, Quebec has a huge competitive advantage in aluminum production and other energy intensive industries. No amount of protectionism will get the US price of aluminum production down to where it is in Canada. The US simply lacks the energy mix necessary to replicate what Quebec has. I think even from a consumer standpoint, Quebec residents only pay the equivalent of something like 4 cents per kWh for electricity. They've had the cheapest electricity costs in North America for decades at this point.
