Maybe Reed just isn’t a generational shooter we think he is? He’s 37% in high school. 52% in his only college season with 144 total 3 point attempts. Then entering NBA, oh well. Could it be that his 52% in college is just a fluke with relatively low sample size?
I'm not even sure this guy can dribble in between his legs. I've not seen it yet. It's possible we all got duped
Blah blah blah blah blah gonna just round down for Reed and round up for Jalen. If Reed is as crap as Jalen 4 years into his career I'll give him **** too. But I don't give a damn about a rookie just like I didn't care about Jalen his first two years. Reed gets a pass. Jalen's scrawny inefficient ass doesn't. Keep holding your breath that Jalen becomes....whatever the hell you think he's going to be at this point. "Roughly 2 year gap". Lmao. He's 2.5 years older 3.5 seasons into his career. Keep fudging the numbers though.
Technically since the 1st 2 years don't count for jalen because of Silas, he's only been in the nba for one season longer than Reed.
I don't see what some of y'all are seeing when you say "not an NBA player" etc. To me he passes the eye test--ballhandling, motor, athleticism, decisionmaking all look NBA-caliber. Maybe those things, given his size, are just at the level of a really good bench player, but I mean... I told y'all not to expect too much out of the top prospects in this draft class. The real problem is just that he clanks most of his jump shots. If he were making them at even an average clip I think we'd all be fine with his production so far. So, if the shooting ever even comes close to living up to expectations, I feel pretty confident he'll have a fine NBA career. Question is just whether that's going to ever happen.
Jalen's scrawny inefficient ass still much better than Reed Sheppard. Sheppard isnt even better than Rookie Jalen, Jalen had his first 30 pt game in his 2nd game, Sheppard took like 10 games to get to 30 pts. Its funny you call Jalen inefficient when Sheppard is scoring at 40% TS, something Jalen never did. You really losing your **** about 1% round up or down, you realize the gap between 35% and 27% is more than 1%? What about the gap between 40% and 55% TS??? Give up 2% to Sheppard if it makes you feel better LMAO. Bruh 1% only matter when they are close.
My concerns with Reed were getting his shot off and defense. Though he hasn't found his shot, I have full confidence it'll get there. He's a rhythm player...better with the ball in his hands. I like the looks that are coming. The game will continue to slow down. To be honest, Reed's surprised me a little on the defensive end. Not as bad as I expected..good instincts, but physically challenged. (size/ reach and lateral agility) RS is 20, and I have no doubt when all is said and done, he'll be worthy of a 9-11 pick. High floor...just not sure about upside beyond. Still, a reach at 3, but a safe pick nonetheless. At minimum, a sixth man.
He may very well end up being a specialist and be a 7th or 8th guy off the bench on a good team but I agree that the things he struggled with this year were largely expected. I still think he ends up a rotational NBA player and maybe even a solid starter and concur he was safe pick because of his relatively high floor. Undersized guys tend to take a little longer before performing in the NBA - same for PGs. Reed is both undersized and learning to play NBA PG at the same time - the odds were always going to be stacked against him in year 1 but the bball IQ is still promising and those types of guys tend to figure it out after 2-3 years. The only real problem with Reed in year 1 isn't really Reed but rather the wildly unrealistic expectations on this board of people thinking he was going to single handedly solve our shooting struggles immediately. I can't help but continue to feel like Steph Castle would have been the better pick overall just like I was saying at draft time that Reed may end up being the better fit for this roster but Castle would likely be the more valuable player league wide because of his ceiling. Ultimately this is a good pick if Reed ends up being at least a decent starter with good shooting AND this roster stays similar and construction to what it is now(lots of taller uber switchable defenders to surround him with) but if let's say Houston shakes it up this offseason and trades guys - then I'm not sure Reed is as valuable to us because he will always be a bit of a defensive liability and require the right team around him to maximize his value on both sides of the ball.
on a half dozen defensive possessions today he couldn’t stay in front of his man and gave up easy drives. coupled with the horrid shooting he should not be on the court outside of garbage time
I'm not sure Risacher is worthy of a 3 pick in a more usual draft year? That's more the issue - not a lot to choose from, so take a flyer on someone who looks to have one skill that can translate at a high level (shooting). It might not tho....
I think this is an objectively fair post, but I do take issue with blaming the fan base for expectations. There is probably not a single thing about Reed that’s worthy of a top 5 pick in any draft except his shooting (or the consensus opinion/expectations of his shooting prowess). And he seemed like such an anomalous off the charts shooter that it displaced the other issues which would have seen him be a late lottery pick. Said another way, if the NBA didn’t think Reed was going to be an elite shooter pretty much right away then there’s no way he’s in contention to be drafted top 3. I think the expectations were a function of that. 6’1” guys without Trae Young’s shooting and playmaking don’t get drafted this high. Hence, “disappointing”shooting would have been league avg. This type of shooting is like a -2 standard deviation or 1/20 type of outcome relative to expectations. That’s on Reed and on the Rockets. Not on us.
I think Reed will eventually be okay. I also think at this point he's borderline unplayable. He's not good enough at the moment to be getting rotation level minutes on a playoff caliber basketball team. He's just not there yet. And that's extremely unfortunate for a number 3 overall draft pick. I do believe in him, there's something there, he's just not ready.
Donovan Clingan sure would be helpful right now at least.............at least he can see over defenses.......
Most of those were Quickley beating him off the dribble, and that's a dude who really lives up to his name--Reed shouldn't have been left on an island against him in the first place. He stayed in the plays and it would've been fine if the help had been there as it's supposed to be. Whole team has been making defensive mistakes lately.
Kinda similar to Jabari too. I think his freshman college season and senior HS seasons were the only times he was a 40% shooter.
