No way. He ain't getting 200m. I don't really think he is worth the original offer. The Astros should walk away, even it causes a down year. They have a lot of money coming off the books next year and not having Bregman will make them much more nimble to be contenders in 26 and 27. We are loaded with OF prospects. 1 or 2 will pan out. I'm not being impatient. I like the old take it or leave it Crane better than the sentimental Crane.

Doesn't make any sense when no other team is offering more than "10 cookies."

    Point of parliamentary procedure!

I mean, yeah....we're fans. We care about our favorite players and our favorite teams. Weird that there are some in this thread who think that's some kind of character flaw or something. Like we're supposed to just be totally impartial with all of this and we're not allowed to care one way or the other.

We're fans. We're not computers spitting out analytics or AI bots weighing each side of the negotiation completely impartially.

We're fans. You can't blame us for being emotional. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the entire MLB fanbase as a whole? And if the entire MLB fanbase is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our professional sports institutions in general? I put it to you: isn't this an indictment of our entire American society?

Well, you can do what you you want to us....but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America! Gentlemen!

I take all that to mean that Bregman had his heart set on $200M and Boras hasn’t yet had the tough conversation with him that it just isn’t there. Either that or another team has offered $200M and Bregman is begging the Astros to match it. I can’t see the hang up being over <$20M and if Houston came up at all from $156M then they’re within that range of any other offer under $200M. Gonna be an interesting next few days.

Except we don't actually know what any other team has offered. And from what we know from rumors, that's actually probably not true.

Caring about your favorite teams and accusing people of being greedy assholes for not doing just agreeing to whatever your team wants are two different things. And the reaction to Bregman now and Correa a few years ago makes clear people don't actually care about their favorite players. They just care about how those players benefit them.

If Bregman has an offer worth $200 million over six or seven years, he wouldn’t still be negotiating with the Astros because they aren’t likely to increase their original offer by $44 million. He would be deep in negotiations with that team, and we would be hearing reports there is momentum towards an agreement being reached.

Yes, but there’s likely some discount Bregman would give Houston over Detroit or Toronto. If Houston upped their offer to $170M/6yrs, and Detroit has $200M/7yrs on the table, Boras is probably telling Crane “Get to $190M and he’s yours; that’s only adding 1 year and $20M to what you’re already offering.” So it’s not a $44M difference, it’s more likely ~$20M.

I don’t think that’s necessarily likely, but it’s possible. I agree with you, as I think it’s very likely if Bregman had a $200M offer in hand, he’d be signing it.

Unless Boras and Bregman still think somebody is going to give them the 12.

    Just take the 10. Geez.

Good point. I also feel like if there was a team who was blowing the Astros offer out of the water, they’d leak it to publicly put pressure on Bregman to accept it.

I’d be a little surprised if a team has had an offer out to him that is significantly higher than $160M. Hard to believe a team weeks/months ago was like “our offer is $200M/7yrs, now take that and go see how much the team you really want to play for will offer you and just get back to us by opening day.”

This whole saga has been really weird.

No player could resist holding off for a month or two (and now right before spring training) with that kind of offer in hand. Bregman would've caved a long time ago too scared that the offer would go away.

All that team would have to do is go after another FA and give their money to them (or a trade) and Bregs is out. Nah, the Astros original offer was close enough for Bregs to know he can take it, but not close enough to actually do it yet. Bregs will be an Astro again, he's literally just holding out for pennies on the dollar now or that 7th year.

    Lol.

If that's the case, how long do you think you have a job after Boras calls Crane or leaks it to the fans?

If the Astros thought the offer they made didn't benefit the team, they wouldn't have made it. It's still out there, not because of sentiment, but because Bregs is a really good player.

If you walk away, have this theoretical down year, "stay nimble", pivot to 2026, who are you signing in 2026 with that money? Tucker is the biggest name next season. Is he coming back? And Vladito, but we don't need a 1B. Cease, Gallen, and Framber are the best pitchers available. Would we resign Framber, or do we let him go, too? The reload can become a rebuild pretty fast in baseball, if you're not the Dodgers with infinite spending.
