Who are the Astros even bidding against? Feels like they've fallen into the trap of playing Boras' game. I'm going to hold a lot of resentment toward Bregman whether we sign him or not.
Knowing Astros offer is still on the table, is he using that as an insurance policy? Looking for a team to bite and if no one does, he'll just sign with the Astros? If that's the case and it won't happen but the Astros should tell Boras each day that passes, we're taking away x amount of dollars from our offer. If they're confident a team will bite then should have no issues. But if they're unsure then perhaps that'll encourage Bregman to accept the Astros offer now.
Well that Ari Alexander tweeted that they upped their original offer according to sources. Although still not enough and still don't expect him to sign.
He took that from Jon Heyman and added some additional information for sure. Ari was talking with Bagwell a lot this past weekend at the TRISTAR event.
Really? He would need to stay healthy and productive for 4 years and then get at least 2/$36 at age 35 just to break even
If he’s astute/sophisticated, he should also realize the market is exactly what the league values him at. They’re probably holding on to the hope that some team will have an injury… then Boras will try and create another market. All the middle class players in baseball should be looking at Bregman, Alonso, and the rest of the non mega-stars getting nickeled’/dimed. There is a middle ground where a better CBA with hard floors, a ceiling that can escalate (but a ceiling nonetheless), harsher luxury tax penalties, and penalties for small to mid market teams that intentionally don’t spend (e.g. - no revenue sharing). The mega-stars will get there’s regardless, but the upper middle class will get what they feel they are owed from the teams that just don’t feel the need to bend over backwards for right now because nobody can make them.
Not from Bregmans point of view but whoever is leaking the "improved" offer could be looking at AAV. Of course, a shorter contract would be better from the teams POV
He signed that original extension after his monster 2019 season and after complaining about being underpaid via a contract renewal. Can't have it both ways.
For what? Being a free agent? For doing what's best for him? No one's holding the Astros hostage here - they can always move on if they want.
For what? Why are they upping the offer? Who the hell are they even bidding against? They should take away 1 million dollars per day that goes by. We're getting played
If they’ve improved the offer and he still won’t take it, that’s ridiculous. No one is offering more money or years. How much foolish pride can a dude have??
He has a number in mind. Astros are close. Boras using that number to up the ante with other teams. No other big name free agent out there so Bregs can take his time. All he wants is to milk as much as he can before he finally signs.
He signed the extension after his monster 2018 season, and then had the monster 2019 season before it went into effect..
