He wanted to stay in NY but really - he never got any strong offers. He was one of the guys squeezed this off season.
30 is a lot, but the value is that the Mets get him in 2025 and then get to likely kick the can if they want to.
Looks like Astros aren't really interested in anyone but Bregman. If he doesn't sign, I imagine they bring back Heyward and call it a day.
I think Gamel was their insurance move. They’ll wait on Bregman and then if he signs elsewhere they’ll circle back to Arenado. I will be really surprised if they add any other position players outside of those 2 guys.
Not until 2026. This is what they (we) get for the Abreu and Montero deals. I'm not one of those Bagwell or even Jim Crane blamers - I know the organization has several people who agreed on these deals, including Click, from what I understand. But the team is where it is due to those misses regardless. This team will be better off in 2026 regardless (Walker should be great and would not be here) but for 2025 the team doesn't have the money to add another bat. The exception is Bregman or Arenado specifically because of Crane's appreciation (obsession) with stars and big names.
I really like the Gamel move. He has pretty consistently gotten on base against RHP in recent seasons. Not a lot of upside there, but a pretty good platoon floor. I'm honestly surprised he ended up on the MLB fringes given how solid he's been against righties. He was excellent in 21 and 22 and somehow ended up in AAA without ever actually failing to hit them. He got back to majors last season and was solid again.
Boras needs leverage to do his job. He didn't have any with Alonso only really wanting to be a Met. That said, if he keeps signing shorter term deals, he'll lose security but likely end up making more money. Compared to the 3 year $71 million offer the Mets were stuck on, now he only needs to make $20MM a year the next 2 years to match that. If he's anywhere decent, he can make that. It's less than we paid an aging Abreu.
He was needed. And the deal is largely non-guaranteed. The only better options on the market were Verdugo and Heyward. Verdugo is cost prohibitive for sure, and not all sure what Heyward's price tag is.
Do against LHP now… It’s a steep contract but the comparison to Singleton who is at best a platoon option isn’t a good one.
He has a fair 6 year deal on the table with Houston… I guess he really doesn’t want to be here because it’s clear he isn’t getting some sort of insane Correa contract.
It's a straight up statistical comparison of OPS vs RHP which make up 70-75% of at bats with no objectivity involved. Singleton produced on par with Alonso offensively vs RHP. It is not a subjective opinion on who is the overall better player. OPS vs. LHP in '24 Paredes .867 Caratini .812 Peña .811 Diaz .806 Alonso .803
FWIW Gamel projects as Houston’s 6th best hitter this season by wOBA. There’s a very stark contrast between the Astros 5 best hitters and the rest. Alvarez stands alone. Altuve, Paredes, Walker, and Diaz are all grouped together as very good hitters. Then Gamel, Pena, McCormick, Trammell, and Dezenzo are clumped together as perfectly average guys. Meyers, Dubon, Caratini, and Melton project as below average hitters. Houston either needs to add one more really good hitter or get some extremely good luck.
Eh/ they don’t need luck they just need to 100% platoon. Thats 1 mvp type bat- 4 allstar or fringe all star bats and 4 average bats with maybe 1 of them above average. Just have to have the will to do what numbers and common sense say to.
This would be great. Just need health and figure out how it works with a 26 man roster. With everyday starters at catcher, DH, and all 4 infield spots + a backup catcher, that leaves 6 roster spots to fill OF and position backups. With Dubon on the team, the remaining 5 can all be outfielders.
