Being an Astros fan since the late 70's, I just assumed we would never win a WS - much less 2. I thought 2005 was our only shot. So I'm very happy to have 2 when my expectation was 0. That being said, you're right. We really should have 4 not 2. 17, 19, 22 and 23.
1980 and 1986 nearly wrecked me (I was 10 and 16 and had met and played catch with many if those players). The mid to late 90s Braves and then Padres frustrated me to no end. 2005 White Sox that just felt like a team of average guys and journeyman. 2015 when it was THIS close As fans we have had our share of heartbreak, even before 2019 and 2021. Maybe it's just my fan bias, but it felt like the Astros were the better team in ALL of those. It just goes to show the more you get in, the better chance you have because in MLB the shorter the sample size, the more luck and chance there is.
I don't remember much about 1980 except seeing my all-time favorite Astro (the guy in your avatar) totally dejected in the dugout after the final game. 86 was devastating. No question we would have won Game 7 against the mets with Scott on the mound. The Biggio/Bagwell teams of the 90's, I just had no expectations for the playoffs. It seemed like Kevin Brown pitched every single inning of every game of that SD series and we had no answer for that guy.... 2005 I thought was our year because of what Beltran did in the playoffs. But it was okay because surely Beltran would resign with us and pick right up where he left off right? But he broke our hearts and signed with the mets. Wait, who was his agent again??...................
That 86 mets team won 108 games and they were phenomenal. The Astros had a 3-0 lead late in game 6 that knepper just couldnt hold and had we won, Scott “probably” wins game 7. Then, Boston had em even more dead to rights and well, we know what happened there. That Mets team was gritty and resourceful. That’s why you can’t just bank the mythical Scott game 7. The Mets may have found a way to scratch that one out too.
Funny that what I took from your post is the fact that you can type the c word and not get asterisks in its place but bit*h is a word too far
The post above about wanting something new does resonate in some level. I think these are all good points. to this I would add- how will this next deal affect my post ball playing life/association with franchise.
I grew up in a family that didn’t watch sports, but hosted Super Bowl parties for the company my parents owned for the workers as a get together. I got into sports when I was around 8, and was fortunate to see the Rockets and Comets win. I started watching baseball right before the strike, and my teacher got me heavily invested into the Astros in the late 90’s. As I also didn’t think Houston ever had a chance to win a title. I was just happy when they made it in 2005. I worked for over 21 years at the same company, and I would always get roasted how the two Rockets championships had an Asterix by it because of Jordan. So when the Astros won in 2017, I was through the moon until the scandal came out. Although they didn’t win in 19 or 23, I’m blessed as a fan that they were able to pull it off in 2022. Not only that they won, but how they won. I still rewatch most of the playoffs from that year, and I still don’t think Houston gets enough credit what their pitching did. I don’t think we will see anything close to that again. Either way, thanks for sharing your experience as a fan. I’m an 80’s kid, and I didn’t get to witness a lot of the heart aches that some of you guys did besides John Stockton hitting that three, and all the three’s Houston missed against GSWs.
If Bregman went to the Cubs, he better have a no-trade clause in hand because he ain't staying the length of that contract.
Yup..It is about the money and that’s why Bregman deserves to take his time and make the right call for himself. FA does not come around every year. Loyalty goes both ways. Springer was held in the minors ultimately because of money. Tucker was dealt because of money. Correa was not offered better because of injury concerns and money. At the end of the day it’s a business and I wish Bregman the best.
2 weeks ago I think I put it at ~40% right now I’d say it’s ~15%. Until he signs it can’t be lower than 10%.
I'd say 80% he returns. There's no way a wealthy person from New Mexico with a house in Scottsdale wants to move to bitter cold climates like Toronto or Boston and geographically isolate yourself from friends and family. Detroit is just straight up a safety issue and just a disgusting place to live. Wealthy people don't have to live there and put up with that... and oh by the way, no state income taxes in Houston and he's got side businesses like Earl Campbell.
Now that Alonso has signed, there are no more factors Boras can use to try to trigger demand. Bregman signs within 48 hrs. . . Somewhere.
