Video game basketball wouldn't be as fun without the three pointer.

NBA says it has no plans to change 3-point shot despite NBDL experiment

    October 14, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA has no plans to change its rules for the 3-point shot, though it will proceed with an experiment for its developmental league in which all field goals will be worth 2 points until the final five minutes of regulation and overtime.

``This is a not a rule for consideration in the NBA and has never been discussed by the competition committee,'' NBA vice president Stu Jackson said Thursday, adding he expects the minor league NBDL to approve the experiment for the season that begins Nov. 19.

It would be the first time in the NBDL's four-year history that an experimental rules change would be instituted.

``We have a minor league that has proven successful in being a training ground for players, coaches and future administrative staffs, but until now we haven't utilized it as a potential laboratory for the game in general,'' Jackson said.

Jackson said data would be reviewed after the NBDL season to assess what impact the rule had on mid-range jumpers, offensive coaching strategies and overall field-goal percentages.

The NBA has had a 3-point shot for baskets made from beyond 23 feet, nine inches (22 feet in the corners) since the 1979-80 season, and the number of attempts has steadily risen over the course of the quarter-century in which the rule has been in effect.

``If you look at the game overall, including the collegiate and high school level since the inception of the 3-point shot, it's being taken with an increasing amount of frequency, which in part has driven shooting percentages south,'' Jackson said. ``The 3 has become a real focal point of offenses, and we would like to turn the clock back and see what the game is like without it and the effect it has.''

No rules changes will be in effect for the upcoming NBA season, Jackson said, although referees have been instructed to call fouls on defenders who extend their forearms to impede the progress of offensive players.

Does the ball have to go in the basket before the clock hits 5:00 or does it have to leave the shooter's hands before 5:00?

Seems like it'll just bring on a load of substitutions and a different type of gameplay after the 5 min mark. What about a situation where a team is solid the entire game, is up by 10+ points at the 5min mark and then loses when the other team subs in a bunch of sharp shooters and gets back in the game quickly? I'd rather see it the entire game than a 5 minute free for all at the end of the game.

    My proposed rule change:

One player from each team should be allowed to punch an opponent in the head, once a game, without being penalized. Two punches is an ejection, but one's fine. Would make the game more interesting, I think.

    a. as has been pointed out, incredibly hokey. maybe baseball can go to 4 strikes for a strikeout in the 9th inning.

    b. scoring will go up? they act as if teams don't wanna get closer to the basket right now. the problem is there are people there trying to keep you from getting closer. what the hell do you think defenses will do when they realize you get the same score for a 23 footer as a 15 footer. they sure won't guard the 23 footer. now you're shooting a tough shot and getting 1 less point for it. people will just pack it in more. this is just like thinking zone D was going to promote ball movement and scoring without realizing jump shooting isn't great and with NBA athletes you can play a much more "hole-free" zone than at the college level.

    c. it would be weird seeing international teams trying to win without the 3. that's about 12-15 points less a game for them.

    d. how does stu jackson still have a job?

The only thing you need to do is to stop the hand checking, the zone, the mauling under the basket and charging calls and scoring will go up by alot.

NBA should contract with the makers of "Super Shot Basketball" machines to make their baskets. While they're at it, they could vastly improve TV ratings by showing a "Turbo Meter" for each player and "On Fire" animation for shots.

I do love this "last minute" idea. It's like having a "Rage Meter" for the game. Can playing ball with hidden ticking time bomb be far behind?

either take the 3 point line out completely in the developmental league or leave it. not this 5 minute bs. why can't they just completely remove it? hell most of those guys would be better off it they had a mid range shot...why not develop it in the developmental league?

Don't forget who spearheaded the last rule changes. Jerry Colangelo. Thats right, Colangleo and his right hand lady Dyan Cannon. Yeah, the freaking actor! I don't know If Jerry Colangelo is still head of the rules committee but this article is coming out of of his hometown so he probably still has the same powers as he did before. Having people who have never played professional basketball and women who are actors as members with voting power to change the rules of the game is a joke.

    I think most folx figure
    If i'm 15 feet out .. i might as well . . . back up and take the 3
Players either want the GIMMIE or the EXTRA point

    Midrange offers neither
    percentages

I like the international rules...adopt those...wider lane, shorter 3 point shot.
