Sports gambling and state lotteries are closeted taxes on the poor. When you look at who's actually spending the most it's almost always those who come from lower socioeconomic classes.

I mean, I guess I kinda understand though? If you're watching your picks' games more closely I guess you're having more fun? In theory? But then I've heard of players getting verbally abused for coming up an assist short of meeting their line.

Especially after Tim Donaghy it really doesn't make a lot of sense. Obviously someone, somewhere has accepted a gigantic bribe to make this happen.

Abuse by "angry sports bettors" is one of the most common types of harassment college athletes receive, making up at least 12% of publicly posted social media abuse, according to a new analysis conducted on behalf of the NCAA.
    ...
The analysis flagged 743 abusive or threatening messages referencing betting or match-fixing allegations, with 73% of them occurring during March Madness, the most popular event with American bettors. Women athletes received approximately 59% more abusive messages than men, the analysis found.

The issue occurred even in sports that are less popular with gamblers, including softball, where 24% of abusive messages flagged were from angry bettors.

Terry Rozier under investigation for suspicious prop betting

    https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketball/terry-rozier-illegal-betting-probe-nba-63a7170b

Federal prosecutors have been investigating whether veteran NBA player Terry Rozier manipulated his performance as part of an illegal sports betting scheme.
The inquiry into Rozier is part of a wider government probe into a sprawling ring of gamblers and poker players who have allegedly rigged games across the sports landscape, people familiar with the matter said. The same investigation has already led to a criminal charge and
The inquiry into Rozier is part of a wider government probe into a sprawling ring of gamblers and poker players who have allegedly rigged games across the sports landscape, people familiar with the matter said. The same investigation has already led to a criminal charge and a lifetime ban from the NBA for former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter.

    Simple 3 step fix:

    1. Player props should be banned
    2. Team props should be banned
    3. Online gambling should be banned

I know the NBA had to replace the money from China, but getting in bed with gambling is such a nasty thing to get into. Pro sports isn’t ‘pure’ by any means, but getting married to sports betting just mucks the whole thing up.

It's a clear conflict of interest. Other than extreme greed I really don't understand why the NBA sanctions it. It's like okay fine, maybe freedom means something, but don't blatantly promote it in broadcasts. I don't care who Barkley thinks you should pick.

Honestly I'd hate to be a player. Imagine getting death threats because you messed up a parlay. You know its common, we just don't talk about it.

I guess Luka going to the Lakers was not a good prop bet . .. but would have paid off handsomely

The dark side of sports betting and its impact on NBA players: Death threats, racism and Venmo requests
    James L. Edwards III
    Feb 12, 2025

After every game, when the duties of that night are complete and Jalen Brunson has a chance to unwind, he opens his phone to dozens and dozens of messages on social media.

It doesn’t matter if he scores 40 points or 20 points. It doesn’t matter if the New York Knicks win by 30 points, two points or lose. The bulk of the messages tend to be the same: They threaten him and his family, including his months-old daughter. They call him racial slurs. They demand money.

Brunson could do what he’s paid to do: play well and win basketball games. And yet, the star guard has spent many postgame nights sifting through harsh messages from people who wager money — sometimes large sums — on things they can’t control.

“Genuinely threatened?” Brunson asked himself, pondering for a moment, after the question was posed by The Athletic. “I’ve never felt genuinely threatened, but there has been some really disrespectful s— said. It’s a lot of people who don’t have profile pictures. There is part of me that has thought about airing them out, but s— always comes back around.”

Now that sports gambling is legal in many states and widespread, this kind of abuse has become increasingly common and unavoidable part of players’ lives. It’s an unintended consequence of opening up this revenue floodgate.

Fwiw, you don't have to pass a law or anything, the league can just stop associating with or supporting companies that do player props

Of course it's toxic and shouldn't be promoted... but this is capitalism. If the house makes money, expect to see a ton of it. Ultimately people need to be responsible for their own actions and not expect govt to baby proof everything . NBA's religion is money first and foremost. IN fact, that is the institutional religion across the country

"It's been crazy," Carter said. "Been getting death threats, people calling me racial slurs, all types of stuff because I'm missing free throws, missing shots. If you're a little kid and not mentally strong, it can mess you up, but I feel like I try to approach it like a grown man."
    ...
"I'm just happy I could help us win," Carter added in the interview. "... It's hard, especially when it's coming from your own fan base. ... It does get challenging at times, but at the end of the day, I'm comfortable with who I am as a man, who I am as a basketball player."

    Go Baltimore

The city of Baltimore sued DraftKings and Flutter Entertainment, the parent company of FanDuel, on Thursday, accusing the sportsbooks of engaging in deceptive and unfair practices to target and exploit vulnerable gamblers.

The complaint, which was filed in Baltimore City Circuit Court, a state court, alleges that the companies use misleading promotions to attract bettors and then leverage data and analytics to keep problem gamblers betting, practices it says are in violation of the city's Consumer Protection Ordinance.

"These companies are engaging in shady practices, and the people of our city are literally paying the price," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said in a statement. "DraftKings and FanDuel have specifically targeted our most vulnerable residents -- including those struggling with gambling disorders -- and have caused significant harm as a result. This lawsuit is a critical step to hold them accountable and protect all Baltimoreans."
