@Big Tex Its funny how the same dipshits who told everyone to keep politics out of sports are the first ones to cling onto their cult hero in every discussion.
He outed himself as someone I immediately put on ignore? FYI: ignore list works great (I occasionally do peek, like in this thread today), you just look at all of the muppets who "like" a certain person's post, and then just immediately ignore them too. It cleans the BBS up so much.
Bregman (Boras) overplayed his hand and now must choose between swallowing his pride and coming back to the Astros offer, or moving his young family to Detroit and risking their security while playing for the Tigers. Or moving to Boston and geographically isolating his family from their roots in the American Southwest. This is a rare case where an agent has really screwed over his client.
If he takes a 1 year deal that's really dumb imo. The problem with him not getting enough money is he's going to get paid for his decline years, so, what's the point in taking the most productive year of his career off the table when trying to make the back 5 years more valuable? Doesn't make any sense. Even if he gets a little bit higher value for that year.
Surely someone has offered him a front loaded long term deal with an opt out, which eliminates the need to entertain 1-2 year deals.
I admit I am a dumbass for engaging with all those pieces of ****. But the tactic of ignoring them clearly hasn’t worked and has only served to let them cement their horrid worldview. And it just gets real real old letting the literal stupidest mother****ers on earth have the loudest voices. But yeah, I probably should have just ignored it all. FML.
You’re just falling into their trap…they get their rocks off to people engaging with them. Ignoring them takes that away.
You would think. But I'm not so sure how willing I would be to front load it too much. I wouldn't be offering $35M in year one with an opt out if I was still on the hook for 5/125 after that, as a for example. I wouldn't have all that much interest in having that much downside risk while giving him most of the upside if it goes badly. I would imagine there might be a 2/60 or 3/90 with opt outs after years 1 and 2, maybe? I'm quickly losing patience with this whole thing and it's playing out to nonsense. I was pretty much in the camp that he was gone and that was fine, but it's like what are we even talking about now? I didn't expect the Astros to make basically the best offer out there (or damn near it) which is what it seems like we are looking at and have AB thumb his nose at it and go somewhere else. If he wants to sign in Toronto for 6/180 and pay a jillion in income taxes and net $4.82 a year more then he wasn't ever all that in on being an Astro, which, whatever, it's just a surprise to me. I can't imagine the point in walking over something like 2or 3% of the total difference in contract which is what it seems like he's prepared to do. It's his right, but I would think at some point in time continuity and being a franchise icon should be worth something to you. Bagwell and Biggio sure have dined out on it for 2 decades (as well they should!) and multiple different FO and ownership groups...
I’m reserving any judgement until he signs. I feel confident the Astros really did offer $156M and I don’t expect him to go elsewhere for <$10M difference in real $. Bottom line is this is Bregman’s sole real chance to secure what will likely be 30% of his lifetime earnings so for now I don’t begrudge him taking his time at all. If he has had an open offer from the Astros that he knew would be available whenever he wanted it then there is no downside to him waiting to see if another team caves with an overwhelming offer and he’s just being smart.
This really is working against players ever accepting that original extension if everybody is going to backlash against Bregman/Boras for attempting to get a comparable AAV to what he would have gotten after 2022. Should Yordan be "taken care of" in hindsight when it comes to his future FA?... to "pay him back" for the low-extension he accepted to begin with? Or will he be "too old with bad knee problems" to warrant the AAV he will feel he's deserved?
