My "List": 1. Jeff Nixon - OC Syracuse 2. Nick Caley - TE coach Rams 3. Will Stein - OC Oregon 4. Andy Kotelnicki - OC Penn State 5. Stenavich (I'll be honest this one doesnt really inspire me much. I've seen the Packers offense. It doesnt move me.) I'd prefer some fresh blood. New ideas.
Well, statistically, Packers had a Top 5 offense. Also had a Top 6 defense so not sure what they're problem is. I didn't watch any of their games. Even missed their game vs us.
So, does DeMeco get to make the selection, or is this some kind of group effort? Personally, I think DeMeco should be the only person making this decision.
I’m not saying that any of these candidates are going to suck. They may be awesome. But it’s a super unimpressive list. I’m not excited about any of these guys.
—Expectations is something done before the Super Bowl, not tied to any date —Best way to have continuity and best relationship with Stroud is to promote Johnson —Numbers slipped last year; not sure you can attribute that to Johnson as much as the state of the offense; lost confidence in Slowik, didn’t think he made proper adjustments —Chip Kelly a popular name with fan base. Never sensed there was passion from the Texans towards getting Chip Kelly; if they wanted him, they could have recruited him and got it done. I don’t feel like they lost out on something. Unconfirmed whether he interviewed or not. —Retaining Johnson, Lazor & Popovich makes sense. Up to DeMeco.
I've got to imagine his opinion is the only one that really matters, but I'm sure he will get input from others as well (including CJ). It's possible Caserio or Cal could override him if the person he wants is demanding insane money (like Kelly made). But that seems unlikely.
Completely disagree on Stenavich. Whatever PTSD we have from Slowick, there's one incredibly important detail we have to keep in mind: Bobby Slowick was *never* a position coach. He went from passing coordinator to offensive coordinator. Stenavich, specifically, has a long history of coaching the offensive line and is a former offensive linemen himself. I don't obviously have any sense for his ability to call plays and scheme an offense, etc - but I feel extremely confident our OL and run game would be improved 5 billion % bringing him on. And I'd argue that LaFleur is a TREMENDOUS offensive mind and playcaller. Watch a Packers game - man, it's a work of art. So working with him, if any of it has rubbed off... Stenavich and Caley are the two at the top of my list. Caley, too, coached TEs - another area where we need MASSIVE improvement. And McVay, like LaFleur, is no Shannahan Lite - those two guys are freaking boy genius monsters.
the Packers Locked on guy joins for the first 10min and makes a great case for Stenavich. Sheds some light on what he’s exactly done as OC and his input into the Packers offense as well as the development of Love.
Hold on... If we go with the Packers OC, Stenavich, does that mean the Packers troll is gonna come back? Because I'm adding that to the list of Cons right now.
If you want the same offense as last year then these are your guys and they need to spend draft capital to fix the ol, TE, WR positions. Another RB wouldn't hurt either. If Ryans decides to go this way, he's basically admitting that there was a talent over coaching issue last year. Because these guys are going to be running the same offense Slowik was running.
This is fundamentally not true. The Rams and Packers do NOT run the same offense as Shanahan. All of these offshoots from the Shanahan tree run their own variations on the basic concepts, sure - but they are deployed differently. I'd be flabbergasted if they promote from within - but if they do, I have to assume it's because Johnson knows what was wrong and has an alternative plan. There's almost no chance he's selling, "Run it back - but with me" Having said that... coaching *was* a big issue. Slowick didn't mix up his schemes; he asked linemen to play in a system too many were ill-suited for; and he had no idea how to generate a running game. Teams were able to, essentially, handle Mixon with a front four and flood 7 into Stroud's passing lanes, all of which were not unique and rarely varied. There's a decent chance they'll be better with *any* OC because Slowick was very clearly not ready for this.
If they promote from within it will be to appease CJ and I think Jerrod will be a fine HC one day. (I've played golf with him, he's a great guy and very smart) But after seeing CJ regress under his and Slowik's tutelage I dont think he's ready for the OC job. But truthfully I wish they would've blown out the whole offensive staff and started over, so I'm biased.
[Rapoport] The Texans are hiring Rams TEs coach and pass game coordinator Nick Caley as their new OC, as CJ Stroud and the Houston offense get a new play-caller, per me and @TomPelissero. Caley drew interest from the #Jets and #Patriots. He was selective and lands in Houston.
