It's probably because nothing about his stats suggest he's on a serious decline. He's been about as consistent as any player in the league for the last 3 years. The only weird thing that dropped last year was his walk rate, but his strikeout rate didn't increase, so it doesn't seem to be an issue of age or slowing bat. He's hitting for the same exact average and the same exact power as he has for several years. And still playing elite defense and having a basically identical WAR.

I would take Nettles ages 37-40 years over Reggie's. Both were getting 400-500AB and Nettles had 8.9 WAR over those 4 seasons compared to Jackson's 0.3

I swear umpires were just F'ing him with the strike zone last year. You put robot umpires in and he would walk half the time he comes up to bat.

    wOBA dropped 20 points
    xwOBA dropped 32 points
    wRC+ dropped 8 points
1st time in his career his OBP was under .350 with a full season of PAs.
    K rate increased 1.6 points.
His ISO was up, so maybe he adandoned plate discipline for an all in approach.
His xSLG was .417 vs. a real of .453, though that has been the case for most of his career, so it kinda points to his home field helping him a lot.

    LOL

The Luka Dončić trade in baseball terms

For fun, we thought we’d lean into our experience covering the NBA and MLB, and imagine the baseball equivalent of the Dončić-Davis trade.

A husky Texan who excels at offense? Meet Yordan Alvarez

A talented and husky Lone Star offensive wizard who doesn’t play defense and still puts up top-10 MVP seasons gets traded to Southern California for a 32-year-old star who has had a great career that still feels unfulfilled? That sounds eerily close.

Alvarez, 27, is about two years older than Dončić. And if he’s used mostly as a DH, maybe he’ll never be one of the top five players in MLB. But he can mash and is definitely one of the 10 best hitters. He has a career .973 OPS. He has finished third and ninth in MVP voting in his last two fully healthy seasons. You plug him into any lineup and the floor for that team comes up immediately.

Manny Machado is great. He has been great. But it feels like he never got to the apex that he once was destined to reach. It’s the blessing and burden of his immense talents. At 32, he is likely to slowly decline with every season. The Padres’ offense would certainly be upgraded if they got Alvarez in their lineup. Alvarez has a 176 OPS+ over his last three seasons; this isn’t even insulting to Machado. The Padres star has also increasingly become a bat-first player in recent years. He has played fewer games in the field than the season before in three straight years.

What a blockbuster this would be. — Vorkunov

    Their others:

    Gunnar Henderson for Bryce Harper
    Paul Skenes for Jacob DeGrom
Ronald Acuna Jr. for Gerrit Cole
    Juan Soto for Zack Wheeler
Bobby Witt Jr. for Mike Trout

I know, start Spring Training already. ;)

If Houston signs Bregman and is looking for a veteran 13th position player to serve as a bench power bat against RHP (upgrade over Singleton) who offers a bit of defensive versatility, I wouldn’t hate Joey Gallo for $2M.

Gallo is a head case and cannot handle criticism- but agree with you

I wonder if this removes Detroit from Breggy sweepstakes.

Ok front loaded like that it’s not a steal but still a pretty good deal.

Yeah possibly but it would be my own speculation. Pretty clear Bregman doesn’t want to go to Detroit. Them adding a #2 starter may help convince him to sign.

    I’d rather re-sign Heyward.

I don’t think Bregs goes there unless there is a decent amount more money than the Astros offer, say 6 years, 175 MM.

The question in my mind is whether the Flaherty signing signals more of a go for it attitude by Detroit, such that they put up that kind of money. I think that deal would age horribly in that ballpark.

hell, I think the Astros offer would age terribly for Detroit. It might age badly for us,
