    “Important hire”
“Lots of interest in Texans OC job”

And yet, littered with first time guys. Hell, forget being a coordinator, many have less than 5 years of being a position coach.

Sorry, not impressed with this pool.

    Jeff Nixon (Syracuse OC)

Adam Stenavich (Packers “OC” in name only)
•LaFleur tree has beared no fruit.

Brian Johnson (Commandos Pass Game Coordinator)
•2022 Eagles make Super Bowl; Steichen leaves & they promote Johnson to OC in 2023; have that epic collapse, he’s fired; 2024, Eagles hire Kellen Moore and return to the Super Bowl. … “Johnson's playcalling was criticized throughout the season, with pundits and players calling Johnson's offense too simplistic and akin to a Madden offense with the way Johnson repeatedly relied on screen passes and go routes instead of scheming players open. Johnson was fired following the season.”

    Jerrod Johnson (Texans QB coach)
•One of the first things said is “Well CJ likes him”. Okay?

    Thad Lewis (Bucs QB coach)

Grant Udinski (Vikings Asst. QB coach)

    Nick Caley (Rams TEs coach)
•I know, everyone wants him since he has that McVay magic fairy dust on him!

Bill Lazor (Texans SR. Offensive Asst.)

Maybe hire the Udinski kid. :p

Yeah, he’s 29, very little experience, never called plays, but hey 5 teams interviewed him!
Yeah, he could flop, Slowik 2.0, but who’s the “guaranteed hire”?

OL coach hire will be just as, if not more, important.

None of these guys seem like home runs.

Oof, none of that has me feeling tingly… this is why I wanted Chip Kelly, same reason I wanted Kliff Kingsbury. We need a “head coach” of the offense. Since Demeco is clearly running the defense. We need immediate, substantial, impact. We tried the flash in the pan new, young guy.. it didn’t work.

Surprised we don't have more big names interviewing, doesn’t that seem odd?

Not enamored with any of the names, but Caley would seem to be the hottest name and I'd prefer his coaching tree.

He's known Jerrod since he was 16 years old and is said to be friends with Jerrod. I will be surprised if Jerrod isn't named OC after looking at the candidates, even though he's not who I would hire. Although I love Jerrod and think he's going to be a fine HC one day.

We know he’s known him forever but that doesn’t mean he wants him as OC over any of the other candidates

    Like who?

Looking at the other OC positions that have been filled or are still open, I don't see any candidates that are "big" names. The big names already have jobs.

The best chances at landing a "name" that already have OC experience are:

    1) Recently fired offensive HC who may not have been a good head coach but is still a good coordinator. Mike McCarthy fits this role, but he's not focused on coaching this year.

    2) College coaches wanting to move up. Chip Kelly fits here but it doesn't seem like there's any real interest.

    3) Coordinator for a team that just fired its HC and is replacing the entire staff.

    4) Former coordinator who failed and was bumped down to a position coach or run/pass game coordinator like Brian Johnson.

I know we don't want to have another first time play caller again after Slowik. But everyone has to start somewhere. Ben Johnson hadn't called plays before he became OC. Neither had Sean McVay. Or Gary Kubiak.

I feel like if you're a successful OC, you're rarely out of a job. You either get a HC gig or you get snagged up really quick. If it's not somebody like Chip Kelly or Mike McCarthy, your best odds are probably to try and find the next big offensive mind who likely hasn't had the opportunity to call plays yet.

    Some great candidates here...https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/c...g-the-top-25-ocs-in-college-football-in-2024/

The college games has begun to transform the pro game. Getting an experienced play caller versus someone learning on the job is preferred.

It’s been transforming the pro game for 10yr+. Papa Shanahan went to the RPO Baylor offense to accommodate RG3 and that popped the lid and started the ball rolling.

What's next? Do they name their OC or find another candidate?
