    Dumb question of the day.
Wife and I are buying a new fridge today.

I suspect the fridge got here in the USA before today. Will I pay a tariff today or will it be at the non tariff price since it has already been stateside?

Take a moment and separate out the plane accident. All I stated was that both sides are lining up making reassured claims when they have no information.

You and others can blame Trump and say whatever you want. Some of its TDS hyperbole and some of its very warranted. That has little to do with the DEI topic.
Never in my life have I encountered systematic incompetence as such found since Covid19. We can blame lazy Americans, Genz, DEI, or whatever. But its out of control. That said, the government and businesses promoting incompetence over meritocracy in the name of DEI is insane. DEI completely undermines the hard work the 1960's democrats put in place. I could rant further but you should get my point. We should be promoting the most competent candidates, regardless of status. It really is that simple. And that is what the 1960's democrats wanted. Modern democrats only see status.

I don't understand why life long Republican continue to support Trump (because he surely isn't a traditional Republican) and I also don't understand why democrats continue to pretend the Biden administration wasn't a complete train wreck. Every administration since Clinton continues to push the threshhold for control and stupidity. Anyone who voted for Harris or Trump has absolutely zero rights to claim the moral high ground.

Side note: Why does the entitled middle class white American Democrat refuse to shop at Walmart?

The Dumbest Trade War in History
Trump will impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for no good reason.
    By The Editorial Board
    Jan. 31, 2025 at 5:41 pm ET

President Trump will fire his first tariff salvo on Saturday against those notorious American adversaries . . . Mexico and Canada. They’ll get hit with a 25% border tax, while China, a real adversary, will endure 10%. This reminds us of the old Bernard Lewis joke that it’s risky to be America’s enemy but it can be fatal to be its friend.

Leaving China aside, Mr. Trump’s justification for this economic assault on the neighbors makes no sense. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says they’ve “enabled illegal drugs to pour into America.” But drugs have flowed into the U.S. for decades, and will continue to do so as long as Americans keep using them. Neither country can stop it.

Drugs may be an excuse since Mr. Trump has made clear he likes tariffs for their own sake. “We don’t need the products that they have,” Mr. Trump said on Thursday. “We have all the oil you need. We have all the trees you need, meaning the lumber.”

Mr. Trump sometimes sounds as if the U.S. shouldn’t import anything at all, that America can be a perfectly closed economy making everything at home. This is called autarky, and it isn’t the world we live in, or one that we should want to live in, as Mr. Trump may soon find out.

    ***
Take the U.S. auto industry, which is really a North American industry because supply chains in the three countries are highly integrated. In 2024 Canada supplied almost 13% of U.S. imports of auto parts and Mexico nearly 42%. Industry experts say a vehicle made on the continent goes back and forth across borders a half dozen times or more, as companies source components and add value in the most cost-effective ways.

And everyone benefits. The office of the U.S. Trade Representative says that in 2023 the industry added more than $809 billion to the U.S. economy, or about 11.2% of total U.S. manufacturing output, supporting “9.7 million direct and indirect U.S. jobs.” In 2022 the U.S. exported $75.4 billion in vehicles and parts to Canada and Mexico. That number jumped 14% in 2023 to $86.2 billion, according to the American Automotive Policy Council.

American car makers would be much less competitive without this trade. Regional integration is now an industry-wide manufacturing strategy—also employed in Japan, Korea and Europe—aimed at using a variety of high-skilled and low-cost labor markets to source components, software and assembly.

The result has been that U.S. industrial capacity in autos has grown alongside an increase in imported motor vehicles, engines and parts. From 1995-2019, imports of autos, engines and parts rose 169% while U.S. industrial capacity in autos, engines and parts rose 71%.

As the Cato Institute’s Scott Lincicome puts it, the data show that “as imports go up, U.S. production goes up.” Thousands of good-paying auto jobs in Texas, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan owe their competitiveness to this ecosystem, relying heavily on suppliers in Mexico and Canada.

Tariffs will also cause mayhem in the cross-border trade in farm goods. In fiscal 2024, Mexican food exports made up about 23% of total U.S. agricultural imports while Canada supplied some 20%. Many top U.S. growers have moved to Mexico because limits on legal immigration have made it hard to find workers in the U.S. Mexico now supplies 90% of avocados sold in the U.S. Is Mr. Trump now an avocado nationalist?

Then there’s the prospect of retaliation, which Canada and Mexico have shown they know how to do for maximum political impact. In 2009 the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats ended a pilot program that allowed Mexican long-haul truckers into the U.S. as stipulated in Nafta. Mexico responded with targeted retaliation on 90 U.S. goods to pressure industries in key Congressional districts.

These included California grapes and wine, Oregon Christmas trees and cherries, jams and jellies from Ohio and North Dakota soy. When Mr. Trump imposed steel and aluminum tariffs in 2018, Mexico got results using the same tactic, putting tariffs on steel, pork products, fresh cheese and bourbon.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised to respond to U.S. tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Canada could suffer a larger GDP hit since its economy is so much smaller, but American consumers will feel the bite of higher costs for some goods.

    ***
None of this is supposed to happen under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement that Mr. Trump negotiated and signed in his first term. The U.S. willingness to ignore its treaty obligations, even with friends, won’t make other countries eager to do deals. Maybe Mr. Trump will claim victory and pull back if he wins some token concessions. But if a North American trade war persists, it will qualify as one of the dumbest in history.

Appeared in the February 1, 2025, print edition as 'The Dumbest Trade War in History'.

Trump seems to get a kick out of ignoring or tearing up treaties the US has signed on to. He sees it as a power move, I guess.

I'm have absolutely no expertise on economy, so maybe someone who does can answer my questions.

If we are the largest importer of goods in the world, how can adding 25% import taxes make our lives better? How can it help all the industries relying on those imports become more successful if we don't have the means yet to produce those parts or grow those products, or produce those goods ourselves at a bigger savings?

I think it's hard to make sense of most of what he does, other than he seems to enjoy being a chaos monkey. With luck there's some kind of deeper game plan here

We don't have to overcomplicate this.

You made a joke about how DEI is being blamed for these tragedies. I understand that it was a joke.

I responded that despite the joke I am unable to appreciate it or find humor in the situation due to the gravity of what is happening.

I do not for a second think you seriously consider DEI to be at fault for any of this ****.

What I want is for rational conservatives to call this spade a spade, and to stop 'but biden'ing everything and pretending that any Democrat (now or ever) would be acting like such an abhorrent monster in response to the horrific deaths of dozens of people, many of whom are children.

Liberals rushing to point out the changes to the FAA and other relevant facts surrounding this event is NOT the same as the sitting President choosing to have a completely irrelevant ideological pissing contest while the bodies aren't even out of the river yet.

These behaviors and moral standards are not comparable in the slightest and I am tired of conservatives pretending that they are.

A cat turd and a cow pie are both dung, but stop acting like they stink equally.

    DC swamp is freaking out.
Coming out now the first thing that was done back on the 20th is Elon and team went into treasury and OPM offices and froze the money and accounts. Locked out managers to prevent the destruction of data.

The **** that is going to come out about how money was just being looted is going to be crazy.
Explains a lot of the panic we have seen from the Dems in these confirmation hearings.

Trump Is orchestrating a hostile take over of the American bureaucracy.

Gonna get ugly and the left will likely behave like cornered animals. They already are.

The biggest waste of tax dollars that goes unregulated is military spending.

How about we go after that spending and get our **** together there? For reference, https://san.com/cc/congress-still-trying-to-figure-out-how-to-reduce-wasteful-military-spending/

It's a bipartisan issue. Trump administration just does **** for optics with no real plan in sight. The fact that you praise it is very irritating, but I guess this is what you enjoy, chaos. Pretending to have a plan when you really don't have one.

Dems are freaking out cuz a unelected individual without any senate confirmation is currently firing anyone who he's had issues with in the past. He has a open investigation with the cfpb and nlrb for worked abuse claims and he just fired their entire board.

Its just insane how low iq MAGATs are. Imagine being such brainwashed that you think the oligarchs and billionaires aren't protecting themselves and aren't the ones stealing

Trump demanded a 300 billion dollar increase in military budget! He just asked for the largest increase in pentagon budget in modern history.

He doesn't give a **** about cutting the deficit. His cult is too dumb

Trump and the world's richest man ARE the swamp dumbass. History books will be written on this subject titled how the plebs willingly turned to fascism and gave up democracy.

    -----
Multiple Trump administration officials, including people at Treasury, didn’t respond to several requests for comment this week.
Musk himself acknowledged his interest in the Treasury Department’s payment processing in a middle-of-the-night post on his social media platform Saturday.

He wrote his team “discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once.”

The post appeared to ignore the mechanisms already in place for Treasury to simply fulfill lawful payment decisions made by other agencies, and that the system’s value to the federal bureaucracy and the nation’s economy lies in its reliability.

Jack Lew, who ran the Treasury Department during President Barack Obama’s second term, said any attempt to disrupt payments made by the BFS would be dangerous to the world’s markets.

“The American people should not have to worry about political interference when it comes to receiving Social Security and other payments the fiscal service makes,” Lew told CNN. “And as the world’s reserve currency, it is crucial to maintain confidence around the globe that the US Government will make timely payments on its obligations.”

nah nobody is cornered. We're just not braindead morons who think the guy who made billions in dark money off a meme coin is suddenly going to root out dark money in politics. We dont think the guy whos going to pass 5 trillion dollar tax cut to help musk and raise tariffs off every day Americans like me and you are "anti establishment." We dont think the guy whos allowing musk to eliminate his lawsuits and competitors cares about being "anti establishment."

I just hope you know historians are going to wonder how you cultists were so brainwashed.
