Probably not the best hung over day-after for this news to break.

The actual original source is paywalled but here's BR reporting on the report.

This is a sign they trust the young guys. Because if they didn't they'd consider trading Fred for a more dynamic win now star guard like Fox.

Because if they are planning on a long term deal it's going to be a deal worthy of more of a 6th man 4th option type role and not the "primary ball handler" contract he got when when he joined the team.

I think it may be a good sign that they see Jalen and Amen the future backcourt. They wouldn't resign Fred long term thinking he's still going to be starting long term. If they believe they need a veteran guard to still start long term, they are going to trade for a more dynamic one like Fox.

Signing Fred long term is a sign management trusts the future of the back court in Green and Amen's hands.

This contract should be a priority after his exceptional game last night.

Yup they aren't going to sign him long term with the expectations he's going to start long term here.

I love the Dutchman, but he's aging and his shooting has slipped this year...

Fred is perfectly fine for this team as long as he isn't dominating the ball in the fourth like last night.

Fred doesn't have an ego issue playing a off ball role. He's done it for long stretches this month.

Does he have an ego of playing from the bench? Like right now?

I don't think it will happen this season. I think he'd be fine coming off the bench next season as long as he feels Green and Amen are ready. Fred would be only against it if he didn't believe in those guys.

Definitely for me a lot less money and ONLY as a backup! If he thinks he can still start and Rockets agree then they can piss off and I want him gone right now.

Makes total sense. FVV at this point is obviously not going to get a $45M team option picked up next year, and also there's not a market for him to get a contract as a FA making above the MLE. Only Brooklyn and WAS have space and both are tanking next season.

Something like ~$55M/2 with the second year as another team option is my guess. Rolls it over another year, gets Fred paid another year, and gives us ~$18M more to play with under the tax.

He can believe or feel whatever he wants...it doesn't matter. The coaches needs to know Fred isn't a starter, or a player that should play more than 30min a game or allow to play heavy minutes in the 4th.

This is a sign the Rockets see FVV as a starter for the next couple of years. Really puts an emphasis on getting a shooting wing now or in the offseason as FVV is a short term option as a starter.

If the Rockets want FVV long term then I take this as a discouraging sign for how they see Reed developing.

I think it's actually the opposite. If they resign Fred long term, it's more of a indication they trust the young guys more. Because otherwise they would be trading Fred and draft capital for a more dynamic vet star guard.
