Like I said, Detroit is not a great place to live, but to act like it’s some shithole relative to Houston, at least to the degree that it would have any meaningful influence on Alex Bregman’s decision on where to sign, is ridiculous. To even bring it up exposes somebody whose worldview rotates around right wing talking points.
You're not a regular D&Der so you might not be familiar with that particular posters schtick. They're just a troll and not really worth engaging.
Translation: Boras is mad Houston won't up their offer so he tells Nightengale that Detroit and Boston are in a race to the finish!
Yeah, I’m trying to think of an MLB city whose downtown isn’t littered with homeless people and whose roads aren’t constantly clogged up or under construction and whose worst neighborhoods aren’t riddled with crime and blight, and I’m coming up empty.
Yesterday I thought it was reported that Toronto was in the lead for Bregman. No one knows, including Alex.
I saw it was possible they had the highest offer but I doubt he really wants to go there. Detroit and Boston have consistently been the two main teams we've heard for 2 months now.
February starts tomorrow but Alex Bregman is still unsigned. Throughout the winter, he has reportedly been sitting on a six-year, $156MM offer from the Astros. Jon Heyman of The New York Post reports that he also has a “lucrative” six-year offer, with an opt-out after the first year, from another club “that may not be not be high on his list.” Heyman mentions the Cubs, Tigers and Red Sox as clubs that have been in the mix. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently appeared on Area 45 with Bijani and Creighton and suggested the Blue Jays might have a six-year offer out to Bregman.
I wonder if this is like a price match thing with the Astros. Show Crane the flyer of the other offer and we'll pay.
I'm willing to be patient for Alex. If he signs here I'll quickly forget all this back and forth BS. But I can't really remember a more cut and dry decision for a FA. You're most likely past your physical prime. You've had unrivaled success in Houston (unrivaled from a historical Astros perspective). You've made a ton of money already. You're extremely valued in the clubhouse. You've started a family here. No single other team is offering a better deal. The team you've grown up with is very likely offering the longest/best deal. If you take a deal with an opt-out after the 1st year then you've just put a ton of pressure on yourself with B2B contract years and you might be right back in this same situation next year, possibly moving your family across the family again. Multiple of the other teams reportedly interested (Detroit especially) play in ballparks that are objectively AWFUL fits for your batting profile. Your previous home ballpark is quite literally the PERFECT fit for your batting profile. This is either an all-time screw up by Alex. Or it's an all-time money grab from Boras. I genuinely like Alex, so I don't hope this bites him in the a$$, but I fail to see how going anywhere other than Houston (save for maaaaybe Boston) will work out for him in the long run as well as it likely would in Houston.
Get political talk where it belongs and that's not in here Not trying to be an ass, but political talk NEVER ends well in this forum (or any like it) We can all have different world beliefs and still love the Houston Astros
Bowden knows But he rarely talks poorly about players He isn't as rose colored glasses about everyone as Steve Phillips is, but he doesn't talk poorly about players much at all. I have no doubt he knows the actual truth though I listen to those guys daily, good show for baseball lovers, but I wouldn't go to it as a place to get inside info
The counterargument is this: Maybe Detroit's offer is definitively better and he's annoyed the Astros value him less than he thinks he's wortth. Bregman gets to play for his favorite manager again with whom he had his best years. If it's a long-term deal, his stats don't matter because it probably takes him to the end of his career anyway. He's already won 2 World Series in Houston as the 3rd or 4th star; is a potential 3rd one that different? Maybe he gets the opportunity to be a centerpiece of a rebuild and gets to mentor young players and be the guy who helped turn Detroit around. Maybe his family doesn't mind moving somewhere new and having new experiences. I'm not saying my version is right. But it's pretty easy to see scenarios that are great in different places and why he may have a tough decision picking from his alternatives. But regardless, if the Detroit story is correct, then maybe all the "the Astros are the best offer!" and "Bregman/Boras are overvaluing him and overplaying their hand!" stories aren't quite accurate.
