Seeing this, if he’s there at 25 I bet we take him. Too many fits with our GM/Coach and a particular need. But the Buckeye fan in me would be very happy with Jackson as well. I have no idea what the injury does to Josh Simmons, but if he fell, that would be a solid get too.
We need TWO stud guards, a dangerous receiver, and a linebacker that excels in coverage. Don't over-think it Nick!
Gotta disagree with you here. I consider the TE position to be an extension of the OL. The Texans dont have a TE that can block worth a crap. Scultz sucks, Stover is coming off of a broken collar bone and wasn't impressive. Jordan is coming off an ACL. Needs Offense 2 OG's, 2 WR'S, TE, RB Defense CB, S, DT I think they can fill these positions in FA/Draft. Caserio has to nail this off-season though.
What I'd like about finding a way to get Mayer : It's the previous regime so the new folks are not yet wedded to the investment in him since he wasn't their selection. He's starting year 3 and we know TEs usually take a few years to really get going. His window of likely showing what kind of pro will be is aligned with our window on CJ. Lots to like and especially if we could get him for something like you suggest, now we also free up our 1st rounder from needing to consider a TE as a weapon. Having the flexibility for that 1st to be a BPA version of a WR or OL would totally be worth getting Mayer for a 3rd vs. hoping Warren or one of the other two top TEs fall.
I want whoever Cody Stoots, Landry Locker and Lance Zierlein DONT want. Those dudes are perfect at wanting and stomping for busts.
Those worried about the TE conversation… We need OL/blocking help and we need weapons. A TE can help with both of those scenarios depending upon who we could pick. Also, picking where we are in the draft, we should be more in BPA mode for a given year. Yes we do have certain gaps, but drafting in the 20s is unlikely to see us getting a top 10 level talent (routinely). So we need to operate as if we need top talent then we consider FA and the draft is upgrades without solely chasing and forcing positions of need. We want flexibility. If an amazing LB falls in our lap, we don’t want to be staring at missing a starting guard. Also classes have tiers of talents. This is widely considered a weak QB year but some teams will have to force that. It’s also considered an ok WR year, but we need one. However, it’s considered a very good TE year so this is a year to pounce and upgrade that position if we can afford ourselves the chance to.
He's not willing to put in the time to scout players. Bryan Broaddus a former Packers scout has taught other radio personalities how to scout but Landry declined the opportunity to learn to scout. Not really surprising.
