Chip is also REALLY close with Ryan Day. Could be one of those, "sorry I need to take this opportunity, but I'll still go on that recruiting campaign before I leave if that helps" ... I dunno, I wanted Kliff Kingsbury for the same reason I want Chip. Getting the hot young guy is bad on both sides:

Either he ends up flaming out, a la Bobby Slowik, and we've wasted more CJ years, or

Hes amazing, and he immediately gets pulled for HC gig and we have to hope he passed enough along.

I solved that by getting identical shirts. They may look the same, but they're different.

Both parties have gone out of their way to make this 'search' look legit. Committed to the part. I see you, Chip.

I honestly think Chip is not a candidate. What’s the point of hiding it if he was?

Im starting to believe this too. Makes a lot of sense, but also nothing at all from either side.

As for Chip Kelly, I do wonder if he ever was, or still is, a serious candidate. We had one report about Kelly immediately after Slowik was dropped, and later, Strassmann said the interest was coming more from 'the agent' than the Texans. I’m assuming that means Kelly’s agent, but I’m not sure.

(One report and then everyone repeats it.)

That said, the Texans have been good at keeping things quiet.

I don't think he was ever in. On the first day of the coaching search he was in Columbus, Ohio celebrating the national championship and he's been recruiting every eligible day since

I'm still not sold on Johnson or the idea of continuity from last year. The way last year's offense looked from start to finish still sticks with me like gum on my shoe.

Is his relationship with CJ, which goes back to when CJ was 16, going to factor into this hire? I'm starting to worry it will.

What is interesting and concerning about this search is less about a specific name (Chip), but the variety of philosophies still in play from folks on staff last year to 180 from it.

On the good front, it says they know something is wrong and need to address it. But it also says they don’t know if it was just the play caller or the whole scheme yet. Whomever DeMeco picks, this is the coordinator on the off side of the ball from his home competence so he needs to have full trust in his selection.

Whether that caller is super experienced or not, I’m very curious how that depth as OC marries with the system. Shanahan offense + young guy screams it was solely the play caller if they go there. Young + new system says it was the scheme, etc.

Kid also had interviews with Seattle (2), New England, and Tampa Bay for their OC positions.
