Staffing at the air traffic control tower at Ronald Reagan National Airport was “not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic,” according to an internal preliminary Federal Aviation Administration safety report about the collision that was reviewed by The New York Times.

The controller who was handling helicopters in the airport’s vicinity Wednesday night was also instructing planes that were landing and departing from its runways. Those jobs typically are assigned to two controllers, rather than one.

let’s rewind a few days back

As part of the hiring freeze, no federal civilian position that was vacant at noon on January 20 would be filled, and no new positions would be created unless required by law or under the president's orders. Trump's order does not apply to military personnel or positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety.

It is unclear whether the freeze prevents the FAA from hiring new air traffic controllers or if these roles fall under public safety professionals.

In a January 22 statement, Democratic Washington Representative Rick Larsen, the ranking member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and Democratic Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Aviation, issued a joint statement condemning Trump for allegedly freezing the hiring of air traffic controllers and other safety-critical positions.

    The Democrats
added that the hiring freeze violates the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which mandates hiring the maximum number of air traffic controllers.

Needs to be taken to the D&D. You guys really need to try harder to stay disciplined in regards to keeping the hangout and D&D separate. Some people seriously don't want to read politics ****. It's really easy for anyone to say, well just skip over the post, but guess what, some other individual wont resist the urge and the politic talk will continue.

I get it, it's our president, but we all know that language like his quote will trigger debate, insults, etc.

    Not many before or since

This a very surprising and unfortunate situation
Cannot blame anyone for it right now .. . . . ANYONE . . . not even DEI

So Trump directly responsible, colour me surprised….I don’t get how this can happen though, pilots have eyes and when you fly over a freaking city, the speed shouldn’t be that high that a helicopter moving towards the airplane does not see it and just keeps going, but that’s based on footage (slowed down) that isn’t very clear.

Unfortunately, Orange Mussolini politicized a tragedy by baselessly blaming DEI- when the pilots and Air Traffic controllers were likely white men.

Your new president is setting the tone and discussion around the country regarding this crash. Don't blame anyone but him for making every single thing political.

Edit: the FAA is 90% white!

    Tf is he talking about?

Sure, I get that. That said, he made it into a political issue the moment he opened his mouth today.

It is possible to discuss something without having to mentioning someone else's statement. I think people can have self-discipline.

Look, I enjoy reading and discussing politics, which is why I go to the D&D to do so (or other news sources). Sometimes, I really don't feel like discussing or reading about politics, so I go to other forums within Clutchfans. We are all adults here right? Surely we can be respectful of this.

I get it, its not that big of a deal, and sure you are right, but usually you interject politics and then here comes the senseless back and forth between two grown adults that can't help but hurl insults at one another rather than have a cordial conversation. If things would stay respectful I would have no issue with it.

You have more faith in humanity that I currently do, lol. Once Trump does his thing and makes a tragedy into a political football, it's very difficult to be like hey , let's have a cordial conversation about this. I agree probably politics should be kept out of the hangout, out of the sports sections of this forum and only in the D&D. Don't think it's possible in this instance.

It's for sure possible. 67 people lost their lives. I don't know them, but as stories come out we can honor them. We can share our condolences. We can even speculate what could of happened. There is a lot that can be discussed without bringing politics on board.
