@aelliott - can you watch this and tell me whether Sengun played bad or good defense there?

Im glad you're starting to see that SOME of these statical graphs you have to take with a grain of salt. Everything is not what it appear on paper and that's why you have to trust your EYES.

You think if Sengun were as good on defense as those STATICS claim, Ime wouldn't be subbing him out at the end of games? I trust Ime more than statics

Eye test is pretty much worthless because your eyes are insanely biased and you don’t watch nearly enough to make it worthwhile. You would need to watch basically every game every team plays and watch a ton of synergy stuff, etc.

Ime didn't sub out Alpi at the end of the Boston game - except on one possession when Boston would have desperately needed a three.

I don't think Ime subs Alpi because he is bad at defense. I believe he subs him because he loves the idea of having long switchable defenders in certain scenarios. This was especially needed in the Hawks game because of the 3pt threat.

He sometimes switches Alpi out when he is concerned about him being picked on by quicker wing players and he does the same with Jalen when he is concerned with him being abused by bigger\stronger wing players. He wants the best matchups possible; it doesn't necessarily mean that either of them have played bad defense on a given night.

Or just watch enough to get a conclusion of what a players strengths and weaknesses are. You think it took Jerry West watching every game Kobe played in highschool to see what he could become?

Kobe was a chunker in highschool and the same way his first few yrs in the pros. Sure he was athletic but he had a determination. Same thing Ime said about Jalen in his Post-game interview last night.

If I had to chose a GM between Daryl Morey and Jerry West, I would have chose West ever time. Morey solely looked at his STATS, he had no idea of personal evaluation. You have to trust what you see.

Watch that video a few posts above of the last quarter vs. the Celtics please. Use your "eye test" and tell me if Sengun played good or bad defense in that video. Thanks.

Don't think it was laziness. He physically couldn't do it. After he bumped knees on the rebound in the first quarter, he put on the leg sleeve. 3 incidents followed: OG Tate gets in a loud discussion with Ime bc no one closed out on the three. Tate is taken out. Alpi didn't help.
Then Dillon pushing Alpi to redirect and rotate. He wasn't rotating for anyone.
Finally the 2 minute benching.. He really didn't rotate on any shooter after that point either. Instead, talked to Dillon where he camped inside the paint.

From the top of my head and advanced metrics don't lie, I can remember the true bad defense games where there was no energy.
2 vs the Spurs, 2 against the Warriors, Bucks game and the MLK Detroit game and contrary to Propaganda, he handled Duren for 28 points last season on a non noon tipoff.

I have no idea what west did to scout kobe, neither do you. You also have zero clue what morey does or does not do, but his drafting track record is fantastic. You can have your jordan or magic as your GM all day, i'll take a sam hinkie 100 times outa 100.

The blitz on Tatum was spot on IMO. He was also able to go back on D after. Good stuff I dont think Landale or Adams could have done it.

I have a few questions because I'm curious about how you evaluate defense -

Do you think it's possible for a player to have a positive defensive impact overall while also being a liability in the final 30 seconds of close games?

If yes to the above, would you describe that player as a good defender or a bad defender?

Do you think having a positive defensive impact is the same thing is being a good defender? Or are they two different things?

Do you think Rudy Gobert is a good defender? (This is unrelated to Sengun, please do not bring up Sengun, or view this as a comparison)

Sengun is BAD at defense. But IME has been able to scheme the defensive system to highlight his strengths and minimize some of his weaknesses. He does well in help defense, closeouts, jamming, and double-teaming. He also has very quick hands for a center (steals). However, he is easily beaten by penetrating guards and lacks the lift and length to guard athletic players 1-on-1.

Adam is better at 1on1 defense against those centers and rebounding but struggles more with double-teaming and jamming perimeter players.

Centers are taken out all the time to protect against certain plays. Anyone remember Tim Duncan being taken out in that Finals series against the Heat? Pop probably made a mistake there, as they gave up an offensive rebound that led to a game-tying three… and eventually lost the series.

I had the same reaction from a ‘Sengun fan’ here. He is probably here under some other name and still in my ignore list. These guys are really pathetic, like the haters.
