Unfortunately, you are exactly right implying that the purpose of Crossfire is to tell people what they want to hear. And that is the exact reason that they were completely befuddled in their almost non-existent attempts to defend themselves.

Can you imagine how embarassing it would have been had the response to Jon Stewart's question, "Why do you argue, the two of you? ", been, "Because we tell people what they want to hear?"

So if you are telling people what they want to hear.... is it possible to accomplish anything else? My answer would be no.

I don't believe that Jon Stewart's show has anything to do with the validity of Crossfire.

I couldn't agree more. Hey, some great comments, Doctor Robert. If it takes Stewart being on Crossfire to get you in this forum, I hope they make him a regular.

BTW, I loved Carlson yelling at the end of the clip, when, I guess, he may have thought they were off the air...

"Well, that went just great!!" Totally exasperated.

R2K, I think our little project may be working.

    Keep D&D Civil!!

Stewart is the most overrated pile of excrement this side of a Dave Matthews tour bus.

When you say excrement instead of ****, it means you're smarty. Or nerdy.

John Kerry is made of doodoo. Or excrement.

For certain but Stewart does wax serious on his show from time to time. He does do straight questioning which is mixed in with his jabs. I would bet that he jabs harder and more constantly on the <b>few</b> conservative guests that he had-- and that's an indicator right there.

Jon Stewart completely pwned these two guys.

And the guy with the bowtie looks like a 15-year old clown.

You're right. He does throw his hat in the ring, especially with his most recent book. People have every right to criticize his politics and show since he does this. My point is that when Stewart criticized their show, they didn't defend themselves.... they said, "I know you are, but what am I?"

Oh, wait. They weren't that eloquent. I think they said "butt boy".

Hey, no doubt Stewart overpowerd them with a huge element of surprise. He was not a good guest-- in the sense that he just took over the show.

Robin Williams takes over a show too, but he doesn't make the host look like an ass when he does it. To make those guys (especially Tucker Carlson) look like asses seemed to be his sole agenda.

As Tucker said, ~" Oh, this really went great...."

Now, Batman, in the GARM where the average poster is less sophisticated, writing down to the audience may be the operative behavior. However, this is the D&D, land of the intelligensia, where poo is excrement and breaking wind is flatulation!:D

And might I add that there is more wind here than one will find at the Cape of Good Hope.;)

Are you basing that bet on actually watching the show or just guessing? Jon has more conservative guests on his show than anyone outside of FOX news and he treats them with respect.

Television is not a medium that is designed to entertain--the medium itself does not allow for true discourse or debate, true discussion or insight. It is an entertainment medium, even when it tries to be educational.

Look--when Abe Lincoln was still actively debating, the town hall debates would last for 6-7-8 hours. One hour opening, one hour rebuttal, etc, etc. People had attention spans that could actually andle this kind of complexity and dialigue. Now, for something to be watched, it has to be cloaked in the garb of entertainment. Education can be fun! Let's make a rock song out of the Bill of Rights so the kids will pay attention--forget the fact that there is no true understanding of what it *means*. Sometimes, education is not fun--it is just hard work, and there is no evidence that making education 'fun' (not that it should be unbearable) actaully improves comprehension and retention. Let's give the presidential candidates 2minutes to talk about incredibly complex subjects....since we need good ratings and people won't concentrate for more than that. If you reduce subjects to fractoids then people begin to believe that the answers really are that simple. Crossfire purports to be a true debate but JS was absolutely right. it is hurting America by furthering the belief that issues are solved by yelling at each other and focusing on "entertainment worthy" topics. It aids in the already hideous trend of the dumbing down of America.

JS called it as it is.

I watch TDS just about every night. Name five conservative guests. I've seen Marc Rasciot (SP) and Pat Buchanan on there in the last three months or so. None other come to mind.

Don't bother! I just went to the Comedy Central website and found these interviews posted. These may not be all the interviews (the ones I recalled are not posted: Buchanan and Rasciot).

    <b>CONSERVATIVES</b>

    -0-

    <b>INDEPENDENTS</b>

    Bill O'Reilly
    John McCain

    <b>LIBERALS</b>

    Desmond Tutu
    Sy Hersch
    Rosie Perez
    John Kerry
    Joe Biden
    Carol Mosely Braun
    Wesley Clark
    Tom Daschle
    Bill Clinton
    Al Franken
    Tom Hanks
    Richard Clarke
    Robert Reich
    Jeanene Garolfolo
    Will Farrell
    George Carlin
    Howard Dean
    Jerry Seinfeld
    Michael Moore

    It's not even close.

I'd have to agree with this. I don't catch it that often, but every time I do he has someone from Kerry's camp it seems like. From Kerry himself, to his campaign manager, to others. I'm not sure who you're referring to outlaw... TDS is clearly one-sided

I personally watched him interview RNC chairman Ed Gillespie, Tucker Carlson, Bush PR hack Karen Hughes, Republican congressman henry bonilla, and that is just off the top of my head.

You're batty if you think McCain is "independent". He's a dyed-in-the-wool conservative.

Here's your 5 conservatives, with a few more thrown in for good measure:
    Racicot
    McCain
    Buchanan
    Karen Hughes
    Ann Coulter
    Ed Gillespie
    Dan Bartlett
    Henry Bonilla
    Bill Kristol
    Ben Stein
    John Lofton
    Ralph Reed
Ed Koch (Dem, but voting for Bush)
    Bob Dole

Those are all I can remember right now.

O'Reilly and McCain are registered Republicans.

And it's kind of cheap to throw in actors (Tom Hanks, Will Ferrel, George Carlin, Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie Perez) who happen to be liberals into the "daily show liberal agenda guest list"..

They're *FAMOUS*.. they go on his show to talk about movies, tv shows, etc.. not politics..

Oh, and Tucker Carlson has been on the Daily Show as well.

These days it's the primary qualification.
