Cap is going to keep going up for a while, but almost everything is based on percentages of the cap. Maxes will go up, min salaries are going to go up, mle is going up, rookie salaries will go up. SGA is projected to be the first player to get $80m for a season when he signs his next supermax deal. That will give you an idea of how salaries are going to blow up. ( https://www.on3.com/teams/kentucky-...me-1st-nba-player-earn-80-million-one-season/). Whether we can afford all those guys is going to be tough because you need to fill out an entire roster and players are going to cost more. Really depends on where the middle class salaries land. If they stay on proportion to where they are now, then it will be very tough. If the new money creates a "haves" and "havenots" situations where stars are making outrageous money but middle class and low end are making much less percentage wise, then its not a problem. My assumption is that most all players are going to want to be paid market value and market value is the most any one team is willing to play. We've seen plenty of cases of franchises overpaying to get a player to sigh there (see Chandler Parsons). If everyone gets the most they can, then it will be difficult unless you are going to fill the roster out with league minimum guys. If I had to guess, I'd say that there will be a consolidating trade coming in the next year. If we wanted to keep all of them, the optimal thing would be to extend them sooner to lock them in at a lower scale. Of course, since our guys are on rookie deals, we can't do that yet.
The Rockets have a GREAT lengthy future ahead of them, I just hope Tilly doesn't undermine everything by being a Scrooge or becomes impatient! You play the cards you are dealt!!! Spoiler: The Gambler said it best.... ....... ....... .......
I think his trajectory implies that he will be the first one to have proven it by the time he is extension eligible.
Unfortunately one or two will want to make their own solo Albums. But I'm for making them all stay here.
They are all pretty much the same age (I think Jalen is half a year older than Alpi and Amen is half a year younger or something). Glad to have all three.
By the way, while Amen will almost certainly sign a rookie max (25%), I think it’s very likely he’ll eventually take up 30 - 35% of our cap.
One can argue he’s a max player TODAY, even without any improvement, which is highly unlikely. Just look at the guys getting max extension last offseason. I would easily take Amen over most if not all of them TODAY.
I think inevitably, someone is going to want to actually test free agency (i.e. they will not want to sign an extension) and the Rockets will have to make a decision on trading them for value ahead of that time, or letting them walk and hope for the best. If it’s RFA, we can decide to match or not. There is just no way three years from now we will have our Core 7 locked up and 8 minimum players, though it’s good to know we technically could. Something will happen between now and then to disrupt that. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.
When? Sengun and Jalen both got less than max. The market determined that and they agreed. Jalen can opt out and seek a max in 2027, if he wants. Sengun can do the same but not until 2029.
Which is great for the Rockets, and I am happy about it. However, "the market" didn't determine it. They decided to accept the Rockets' offer, instead of testing the market after this season. Only the Rockets could make them an offer now. Could have arguably gotten more money then, but committed to the Rockets. This might end up being huge in terms of keeping our team together.
The hope is that Sengun taking less than the max (even though he is a top 25-30 player already) set a precedent and other guys will follow suit and be willing to take a little less to keep the team together/keep winning. Green's opt out worries me since I could def see a team offering him a max, even though I think he is appropriately paid as a less than max level player. Hopefully Cam/Reed will still be around and developed more in the event we can't afford him.
As long as fat people keep going to Landry's and drunk people keep losing money at the Nugget, Tilman can handle this! @Os Trigonum @Salvy @Jontro
No they bought insurance by taking less money. Unlike other teams rockets had multiple potential stars and better fo and did not offer them max contracts prematurely. Based on what the market offered for other extensions and their past performances Sengun was a sure max player. If green played like this last year or opted to wait he would be a max player as well.
I think if the Rockets aren't going to keep their picks, it's going out in a big trade. Will be interested to see how far they will go to get Fox this trade deadline.
I wonder if it is worth testing the market on Jabari and Tari through RFA. Tari is the one I feel most uncomfortable about given his leg issues... I don't think anyone would max either of those two. If it were possible to get them at 25M each, that would be a good deal IMHO
Yeah, I feel like the most I'd give Tari is something along the lines of Dillon's deal, maybe for 3 years instead of 4 (Dillon's was 4 years, $86M structured with a declining annual value). The leg stuff has been too concerning. Otherwise, I'd go to RFA for him. For Jabari I'd go a little bit higher than that. I'd reference Nic Claxton (4 years, $97M), Patrick Williams (5 years, $90M), Isaiah Hartenstein (3 years, $87M) as precedents. Of course plus however many percent the cap increases. So yeah probably around $25M AAV like you said.
I agree but thats the problem more so with Jalen, he THINKS he's a max player im sure of it, so when its the time he's going to ask for it. He may end up sitting around until a lotto team offers him a max, which i dont even know if that even makes sense right now.
