This perspective though would be tight for everyone. Basically the new model is you can afford 2-3 max guys, 2ish above average players ($15-25m) and the rest minimums and picks. If we have Sengun, Green and Amen locked in for maxes + 8 minimum guys + $100m to split between Jabari/Tari/Cam + Sheppard still around... then why are we going after FA's and trades? Those will be marginal and only done in windows when possible. You have to be able to win with 3 maxes, 2-3 great role players and 8 minimum/young players. I think basically this tightness can go with one easy simple decision: by 2027 we have to cut someone from the core. We will have had 4 years under Udoka to make assessments. That's fine, I'm sure there will be someone who we will practically all agree is not going to move forward with us. There's 7 of them, it's bound to happen for one reason or another. So 2 years from now we have to vote one guy out. Easy I think. If Green gets that good where he goes for max, we're going for the title so I think then we should be around the limits. Feel more positive about our situation after this thread.
Do the core 7 need to all hit to warrant this? Say Sengun/Jalen/Amen/Jabari/Tari never take another step forward. Reed in this case develops into... say Payton Prichard. Cam into Jordan Clarkson. That team is still going to be expensive based on how players are generally paid. Jabari would still get $30mil, Tari and Cam probably $20~25mil, Jalen will likely opt out for a bigger payday, Amen will still get max or near max, and the Rockets would still need a PG and backup center at the very least.
Or he gets obviously snubbed for All-NBA and everyone is up in arms about it, then he turns around and wins an MVP award the season after he gets extended?
FVV wants his last contract coupled with his retirement so you extend him on lower AAV over more years and grant his wish.
Totally disagree. Amen, Jalen, and Sengun are all going to be max players. Are they right now, no. The wild cards are Tari, Jabari, and Cam. Jabari and Cam can go either way. Tari is a career 6th man in my opinion. I would try to extend him now for Brooks type money. I think Jabari ends up with the type of money Sengun and Jalen are earning now. Amen eventually is super max. We can't keep them all.
I am think that they will keep in the Green/Sengun money type of thing No one will get more than the Star Plus FVV, Adams and Brooks will fall off the books soon Rocket River
Nice breakdown and thanks for the effort but in no way does Tari deserve anything close to 30m. Nothing against his play or him personally but you can't commit that type of money with his short history. Too many red flags and in fact so many that you need to think about drafting a potential replacement soon.
Cam has superstar upside. He's 20...AT MINIMUM, Dude's a best sixth man ...more likely..an all star one day.
Oh, I agree, I was just exploring whether it was possible. I don't think Jabari quite deserves $30M either, let alone Cam at this stage. But Cam has another year to prove himself before he's eligible, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Bari at least get close to that number.
I've not looked too closely at the numbers, but I'd guess $150M over 5 years will be role player money or close to it by the time his rookie extension kicks in.
I think Clutch just meant that JG and Sengun are already signed to non-max contracts. To be fair Jalen's is short enough that he could still become a max guy when other extensions kick in.
Both Jalen and Sengun will demand max when these extensions are up. If Jalen continues his current projection he will not pick up his option and will demand max. I would try to extend Jabari for 30m next year and depending on how Tari finishes the year take a chance on a 25m/yr max. If we are going to let it ride we can pick up FVV's option next year and then let him walk. Ideally he would be traded for several backup players at the deadline this year or pick up his option and trade him in the off-season. He is way too expensive to be a backup or an off-the-ball spot up shooter and occasional Pg like he is now. Durant would have been ideal, but their recent play has pretty much taken that off the table, if it was ever on it.
I firmly believe these Rockets will have the crazy run the Warriors had. Perhaps even a longer dynasty. These young guys are coming together as one. Combined with Ime steering the ship?? oh man oh man….
