If Alex Verdugo can’t crack a .300 OBP and .700 OPS playing half his games in a park that is very friendly for left-handed hitters, I’ll let some other team gamble on him unless he is signing for peanuts. Polanco at least has the excuse of playing half his games in Seattle, but he has never played the outfield and his OPS against right-handed pitchers was .646 with a .198 average. Again, if he wants to play for a couple million at most, fine. Otherwise, hard pass. I’m looking for upgrades on Dubon, Meyers and McCormick. Verdugo and Polanco are just similar depth to what they already have.
He should take that offer. Astros should reduce their offer to match that tomorrow if he is not signed tonight.
Over 2789 MLB pa, Polanco has a wRC+ of 115 against RHP; that’s better than Yainer Diaz was against RHP last season. Polanco has a 33 HR season and 2 seasons of 3+ fwar on his resume and he’s only 31. He’s a very solid bet to outperform Houston’s current 2nd/3rd OF options offensively. I’ll leave it to Houston’s FO to determine if he can play LF.
Just send him a schedule Up until Wed 1/29 - $156/6 years Up until Friday 1/31 - $150/6 years or $125/5 years Up until Monday 2/3 - $120/5 years or $100/4 years Up until Wed 2/5 - $95/4 years or $75/3 years
I don’t have an issue with bringing Polanco in as a depth piece with upside. But, certainly not at anywhere near $10M in AAV. If I was going to pay 10M for someone, I’d have been more aggressive in the Profar sweepstakes.
If the Astros keep their same offer on the table, then it's obvious we are not getting Bregman back. I'd be up for them sweetening the pot a little just to see if he budges.
Nah, this is just playing into Boras game. What happened to the posters here who said Bregman would be an Astro as soon as we traded Pressley? First thing that happened right after they traded Pressley....Boras and Bregman say the deal isn't good enough and they want more.
Or conversely tell him we'll pay him by the month: April: $3 (3 bucks) May: $5 June: $5 million July: $6 million Aug: $6 million Sept: $5 million Oct playoffs: $500K an RBI
This is one of those cutting off your nose to spite your face scenarios. If the Astros think Bregman is a good signing at whatever price they are offering, then playing childish games doesn't help improve the team in any way. The Astros will pay what they think he's worth, and Bregman will decide if that's good enough vs whatever else he can negotiate. That's what free agency is.
Yep, Astros need to assume Bregman isn’t coming back like they have been. Keep the Bregman offer on the table and if he calls cool. Don’t play Boras game and keep looking to better the team.
I'm pretty sure at this point, Crane will go over the luxury tax line for Bregman but only for what he thinks Bregman is worth. It's a take it or leave it open offer.
I don't want Bregman back. Not at 6/$156M. Certainly not at a higher amount. Not with his .315 OBP last year. Not with Altuve's lead weight contract already weighing us down. Not with Paredes already here. We should have signed a mid-tier OF instead. This is not Brown's finest hour. More like amateur hour.
