Agreed. Unless Bregman rediscovers his 2019 MVP-caliber form this year, he’s not going to get a better long-term offer heading into his age-32 season compared to his age-31 season. He drank the Boras’ koolaid and now realizes that was a mistake.
Bregman is an excellent fielder, but his bat has a multi month warm up time. I think he must be good in the club house, is well liked, etc. BUT, this is high paying Performance based league. I would not commit buckets of money long term for him. I think the Astros will be just fine without him.
Breggy has had wrist issues, including the surgery. When healthy, he's still a lot better than folks are giving him credit for.
He's rebounding from Verlander who he literally loved but left him. But real question is... are we at the 2 yard line yet?
I have said it before and nothing has changed. There is no scenario where this team is better in 2025 without Alex than with him. Money does not change that. At $50M, this team is better in 2025 than without him. The only question is: how long does that apply? Are they better in 2026 without him? 2027? That is where the debate can come in. 2025 is not debatable. And on order to get him for 2025 they need to commit to having him 2026-2030. Obviously then you can debate if his 2025 value is enough. They would not have offered him 6 years if they didn't think signing him through 2030 is smart. Hopefully it works out.
It's becoming more and more obvious all of this "Astros are still interested in Bregman" stuff was a desperation tactic by Boras. Agreed?
I actually think the exact opposite. Everything I am reading and hearing is actually solidifying that the Astros DO really want him back. It is also confirming that other teams don't value him as highly as the Astros do. What I am getting regarding Boras is that he is desperately trying to change this but all the other potential teams are not biting on his bait. And the Astros are steadfast in their offer and just waiting for Boras and Alex to realize there is nothing better out there and come crawling back. I expect a deal done before February.
Sounds like his SOP. The Astros moved on after Bregman turned down their offer. Filled the position. Spent the money. They are no longer in the market for a third baseman. If they had the money to spend they would have spent it on an outfielder.
Boras might not be a “bad” agent but at this point it’s pretty clear he’s not getting all of his clients a better deal than they’d get using other agents. Father Time comes for us all, even lawyers.
How is that becoming more and more obvious? It’s pretty simple - if Pressly doesn’t agree to a trade it isn’t happening.
I beg one differ. I think the offer of 6/156 is there if Bregs wants it still. Astros want to dump Pressly in anticipation of that happening, and to perhaps expedite Bregman's return by sweetening the deal a bit.
I don’t think Crane and Brown will let Pressly’s decision affect their renewed pursuit of Bregman. While moving Pressly is the preferred option, they will figure out a way to move another contract or two if Bregman agrees to their offer. Or, they will structure Bregman’s contract with the most optimal amount for 2025.
Boras does well for elite players, but it comes at the expense of his middle class clients, like Bregman and Alonso.
