Slowik: fired Strausser: fired Popovich: expired https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/texans/article/bobby-slowik-parted-ways-demeco-20053807.php Offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also out, and assistant offensive line coach Cole Popovich’s contract expired. Many in the building thought they’d have one of the best offenses in the league. But Slowik’s offense never lived up to the hype, never made adjustments or improvements. Ryans was noticeably frustrated, indicating that the offense needed to improve. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, as well as other offensive players, had also expressed some frustration behind the scenes, and pondered whether Slowik would return the following season. But ultimately the final decision rested on Ryans, who felt the Texans had a roster ready to compete for a Super Bowl, two league sources told the Chronicle. The rest of the offensive staff will be evaluated when the new offensive coordinator is hired. So Popovich could return. There are no immediate front runners for the job, but quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson was once thought to be a logical replacement. Other hot names include Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who also happens to be close with Slowik, Rams passing game coordinator Nick Caley, former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, and Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, who was once a serious candidate in 2022 to be the Texans' head coach.
Surprised. I said it in another thread that I did not think couch would get rid of slow, and I thought it went beyond football. I wrong. Very wrong. And optimistic. I feel like they already know who is coming in.
"There are no immediate front runners for the [Texans OC] job, but QB coach Jerrod Johnson was thought a logical replacement. I meant to say coaching regime. No coach in Texans history would fire an OC after 2 years. Although BO'B would have probably sent him and Stroud to Arizona in a package deal for their 2nd string RB.
Not sure what's making these guys assume that Jerod is "logical replacement" but besides Chip Kelly and Nick Caley, Mike McCarthy is intriguing. I know he's interviewing in New Orleans on Monday but if they hire Joe Brady I wouldn't be mad at all to bring Big Mike to Houston
Very happy with this. Not the same ol' Texans satisfied with losing in the divisional round. This team, with the offseason acquisitions they had, was supposed to be better. It was a disappointing season and glad folks are being held accountable.
I’ve been adamant that Slowik won’t get fired. Glad I was wrong. If Jerrod Johnson ends up being the replacement that would be pretty underwhelming. It may work out great, and I like Jerrod, but on paper that’s not gonna excite me much.
If they elevate Jerrod Johnson, it’s hypocritical. He’s the QB coach when the QB regressed. Clean house and bring in someone not in this system
No more BO'B "DOESN'T MATTER, DIVISION CHAMPS" meme. Those days are clearly over. Although I actually kind of miss referencing it. It's been 45 years since a Houston NFL team has made it to a conference championship game. I'm glad division championships and wildcard wins are no longer the expectation around here.
My thoughts exactly. I don't even know why his name keeps coming up in serious discussions. No, no, no, please don't even consider giving a QB coach on this team the job. I don't care how much he gets along with CJ. We need experience at a higher level than QB coach. We need a guy who has coached and drawn up great plays for the entire offense, and that means running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, the offensive line, and the quarterback. We need a proven professional at that job, and so does our entire offense.
