My memory is hazy but didn't Altuve's lack of range at 2nd base cost us big in one of those Tigers games? I remember him letting a ball get through in the late innings which kept the inning going and allowed the Tigers take the lead. I think it was a play an average defensive 2nd baseman would've made. The entire series was lost because the offense couldn't hit at home though.
I also have flashbacks of Cardinals scoring from 2B on less than 2 out groundball singles to LF, while Biggio 5-hopped the throw to home
While laughing at some of the comments here this thought came to mind Anyone who thinks the Astros would be better off without signing Alex isn’t very smart I don’t know if it would be Jose or Paredes that moves to LF, but 100% we would be a better team with Alex
Boils down to what is worse: Altuve’s glove and lack of range at 2B (especially with shift limited as of last year) versus Altuve’s noodle arm in LF.
I know the Astros like Paredes since they were after him last and he was finally acquired for Tucker this off season but is he basically untouchable for this season? No chance of trying to trade him for a OF? No idea who would need a 1B/3B that has an OF equivalent to him.
Tbh this feels very Beltran/Boras like, Astros aren’t changing the offer and he’d accept already if that was his plan. Wonder if the salsa brand tanks when he leaves
Bregs at 30M/year for a decade is one thing...Bregs at 20M/year for however long is a whole 'nuther conversation
This is fascinating. Bregs not signing cause Astros to deal Tucker for Paredes and Shaw. The door was still open for Bregs because Paredes could play 1B. But Bregs still wanted the big bag. So Astros moved on and signed Walker. If Bregs signs late, he joins a team that has Walker and Paredes in place of Tucker, which I see as a net improvement. Had Bregs signed early (I know it was never gonna happen), we would not have dealt Tucker (at least not for Paredes and Shaw) and probably not signed Walker either.
I seem to recall this happening with Chas in LF and Meyers in CF. Might as well put Chas in RF/Jake in CF and Altuve in LF. LOL
People forget that Craig Biggio was one of the greatest athletes in MLB history. Like, top 10 territory. He could’ve gone pro in football. The fact that he went C to 2B to CF is just crazy and will not be emulated again, certainly not to a HOF level. This news cycle reeks of Boras trying to play up interest to eke out a slightly better offer from whomever is in discussions. I want AB back…but if he does come, it’s not Altuve going to the OF. It’s probably Pena, with Bregman getting reps at SS, which has a lot of issues on its own at this stage of his career. I suppose it’s a good problem to have, but I don’t envy having to hodge-podge our lineup every day to fit everyone in, slightly out of position. If we really want AB back, we should trade Paredes for an OF, but I think our FO is too giddy about Paredes potential and cost-control.
In a perfect world Alvarez would play 140 games in LF, Altuve would DH, and we would all get snocone tickets after every game
Totally agree, but those times have passed. Some on here need to come to grips with this, unless Bregs wants to do a 3 year 75 mil deal. That's not going to happen. But I like how some members are bending over backwards trying to find a place for Altuve/Parades to play if they re-sign Bregs. It's quite entertaining.
I'm actually kinda shocked Detroit hasn't signed him yet, but I'm not him and may not want to be in Detroit
