He wouldn’t say no if the team asked him and it meant Bregman was coming back. Whether the team would/should really do that is a different question.
After authoring the winter’s biggest blockbuster, the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros are again heavily involved in trade discussions. The Cubs have emerged as a serious suitor for Houston setup man Ryan Pressly, multiple sources told The Athletic. By Thursday night, it was unclear whether Pressly would waive his no-trade clause to join the Cubs, and no deal was believed to be imminent. The Toronto Blue Jays and an unidentified West Coast team are among the clubs that have expressed interest in Pressly. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6084862/2025/01/23/cubs-astros-ryan-pressly-trade-talks/
Last time Nook said he wants an extension. Pressly waiting to see if Chicago bites? Or maybe hoping the other teams interested panics and offers extension. Don't blame him. Having to move with his family for 1 year and then having to move again would be annoying.
I'm not a cap guy, but how much of his salary is salvagable if he gets cut? Like if the Astros said, "we are going to cut you if you don't accept this deal to save us money to get under the cap" That would sway the decision right? It would suck for him and his family but it's first world problems... accept the trade to get your full deal. Seems like a no-brainer if the Astros want to move on...
I hadn't thought of that and it would be a bad look for the Astros. I am guessing he would go to waivers like Abreu and wouldn't have much control if someone claimed him. But they would also be able to trade him like Kessinger.
If the Astros don’t like the idea of Altuve or Paredes in LF, I could see Paredes to Boston bringing Wilyer Abreu back to the Astros organization.
with bregman , altuve , and walker all being older guys i have no problem with this. Paredes an play 5 days a week getting 3 or so in Left and a couple in the infield. our OF is a hot mess outside of Yordan . Chas is alright . I dont believe Meyers is actually that good defensively. Chas is not a good defender either . We are a long ways from the days of brantley , springer , reddick , marisnick If Paredes can play 3rd and has a strong arm he can play LF or frankly RF . Hell , maybe we can try bregman in center . He looks good going out for those pop flys ! Definitely would play bregman in the OF before altuve lol
I could see the Astros being creative with Bregman's contract. Astros: "Okay Bregman, we'll give you an extra $10 mil on your 6 year contract, but you'd need to take less money this first year."
That doesn't matter at all. For CBT calculations they take the total contract and divide it by the number of years. The average annual value doesn't change if you back load or front load the contract. The only way to reduce the CBT amount is deferring money beyond the contract years.
I'm wondering if they'd trade Dubon and give Paredes the Super Utility spot. This doesn't help with the OF though.
Altuve- "I want Bregs here, no matter what. Make it happen!" Crane- "Only way is for you to play LF." Altuve- "F that guy, we don't need him."
