The federal government has obvious affirmative action in institutions like the post office. In higher level occupations you still have to be qualified for those jobs. The federal government isn't dysfunctional because of unqualified employees You have to be qualified to work at the post office. Edit: affirmative action isn't the right term for the post office. The post office has a test. I'm sure a lot of people do very well. For higher level occupations like astronaut, everyone is a high achiever.
I hope your father has a good response and can get to treatment free remission. Blood cancers are not fun. $8K a month is crazy but shockingly typical of many of the newer medications. In fact, it's the lower end - some of these medications can run $700K / year. Obviously we have a broken system.
