I don't know if anyone is watching this, but Jon Stewart is on Crossfire and is ripping into these guys. It's absolutely hilarious. He's trying to go off on them and tell them how pathetic today's media is and they are obviously embarassed. I don't know if this gets replayed, but if it does, try and catch it. Jon Stewart is awesome.
I don't know. I frankly only watched this b/c Jon Stewart was on. Most of the time these shows are garbage. As an incentive to watch this if they replay it, here was the closing statement from JS to the younger Republican guy with the bow tie: "You know what's interesting, you're as a big of a dick on your show as you are on any show."
It's not like Jon Stewart isn't right, but I think he's being a little too condescending. And calling Tucker Carlson a dick as they go to commercial is not gonna get him invited back.
Yeah, I'm sure the cool kids are real worried that making fun of the nerds will cut down their party invites...
Jon Stewart was probably just pissed off at the way they were previewing his appearance on the show. Judy Woodruf was like smiling talking about how funny he was or something. I think Stewart thought he could go on and talk seriously, with a little humor of course, but as he said they introduced like a little monkey about to perform. Plus, he's always ripping into the news channels on his show, if he caved in and played by their game how would that have looked to the "Stoner slackers" that watch him everynight ? John Stewart called Tucker Carlson a dick though, and I think that crossed the line. Tucker is the man...
I don't know if they are going to replay it, but CNN Headline News is about to show clips. They went into commercials saying "find out why the hosts of Crossfire weren't laughing at what Jon Stewart had to say."
They didn't show the "dick" line, but they showed Tucker saying "your lectures are boring" and "you had John Kerry on and you sniffed his thrown." To this, Stewart said "you're a..." then there's some crossfire and you hear Stewart say "you are on CNN, the show leading into our is puppets making crank calls." Before all of that, Stewart was accusing Begalla and Tucker or doing theatre and asked Tucker how old he is, 35, and said "and you wear a bow tie." Begalla tried to say their show was debate but Stewart wouldn't budge and said the show was just "partisan hackery."
Tucker Carlson is actually one of the conservative coments that I like. I like his bow tie as well. I didn't see Crossfire, but it sounds funny even though I like Tucker. I like John Stewart and the Daily Show as well. This sounds like a win/win program to me.
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0410/15/cf.01.html I'm reading this and it sounds like Carlson is an immature ass who thinks he's a reporter (but manages to be relentlessly on message) and Stewart is a comedian who knows what he is.
Well, I think Carlson probably does believe he's a reporter and didn't appreciate where Stewart was coming from. Like I said before, I actually agree with Stewart. Crossfire is about talking points, not debate, and it's a weaker show as a result. And when Stewart was debating this point with Begala and Carlson, it was engaging. When he resorted to calling Carlson a dick, he lost a lot of credibility.
I should have said journalist not reporter but I otherwise stick with my opinion. The transcript reads like Carlson refused to answer the question and insisted on holding a comedy show to a higher standard than a purported hard news show. For some reason the person Carlson viewed as unfunny got a lot of laughs in the transcript.
Thanks, man. Good find. Actually, I haven't watched Crossfire since the glory days of Tinsley and Buchanan. I didn't even know it was still on. I like Stewart. He has a very dry delivery which I really dig but I gotta tell you...he came off looking like an a-hole in this exchange. It looks like he came on the show just to lecture them both. I thought he was kidding for the first few minutes (because of his delivery) but as the clip went on you could just feel it going downhill. The whole exchange was just sort of odd. Stewart was on his soapbox about the discourse on the show, but by his behavior he just made it worse.
I disagree, ima. Stewart's been slamming Crossfire forever. He went on there to do it to their faces -- to challenge them in person. The irony is that he went on a 'debate' show to have a debate and all they wanted was to make jokes and blow him off. I thought they both proved his point about it being theater rather than debate. And they may have won the argument (they clearly did with you), but they lost the debate by refusing to fight it. As it happens on this board all the time -- as much from the left as the right -- instead of answering the charge as delivered, all Carlson could do was to say that Stewart did the same thing he was accused of but worse. First, he doesn't do the same thing because he doesn't deliver strictly partisan takes, regardless of whether they're sincere (Begala and Carlson both do that). Second, as he rightly pointed out, his show is a comedy show. It doesn't purport to be more than that. That doesn't mean he can't criticize a show that holds itself to a higher standard. Lastly, could we all get off this thing of being appalled whenever a public figure uses a curse word? Both sides do it and both act appalled. It's silly. John Stewart killed.
I don't understand why Carlson spent so much time, early on in the show, trying to thump Stewart on how he questioned Kerry. As Stewart said, "Who cares??" They could have spent that time on some of the recent events and/or the candidates. Actually, the things they could have discussed were endless. I wish it had been much longer. I think Stewart would have been willing to get into more meaty subjects, given the time. The guy is clearly extremely intelligent, whether you agree with his politics or not. I think Carlson and Begalla were rocked back on their heals the entire time. The look on Stewart's face as it ended was like, "Damn, this is it? I want to go several more rounds with these guys." And kudos to unt2003, for finding the clip. I'm sure there was a bit missing, but it was fun to watch. Keep D&D Civil!!
Thanks for finding the clip. I think Stewart was a little nervous - he is typically pretty courteous (except for Jennifer Love Hewitt on the Daily Show), and he clearly made up his mind about going for the jugular. But if they thought he would come do schtick for fifteen minutes, they do not get him at all. His show is more of a satire of the media -- and how they are failing to provide necessary checks on the political parties -- than anything. The Daily Show correspondent reports? All media satire, pretty conspicuously so. I did not think his "spin alley" comments really hit, but the rest did. The difference between "debate" and "theater" and mixing in the bowtie reference was a bullseye. Nice work. Daily Show and Jon Stewart are, i think, really sharp and sophisticated satire. This program was in someone else's backyard, and he still made the point. Pretty amazing. Tough to watch....
Credibility as what? A comedian? Did Carlson lose credibility for calling Stewart John Kerry's "Butt Boy"
