In the clutch, AlP’s +/- benefits greatly from defensive substitution, meaning he has more offensive possessions than defensive, vs any other Rocket … ie he can’t get negatively dinged in the end-game. come on man over the course of a game/season, I doubt the defensive substitution make a significant statistical difference, but in the clutch …. sure I wish there was a website that actually showed number of possessions on off and def, to see Sengun’s favorable gap.
Good game from Alpi last night, 23, 15 and 6 with 3 stocks on 10 for 19 shooting. He did still miss some shots he should've made around the rim, and missed too many FTs. However, I think despite his struggles in that area this season, he's still having a good season overall when factoring in all aspects of his game. He needs to be more efficient as a scorer but overall he's still a huge positive out there and his gravity really opens up things up for the perimeter players.
At the beginning of the season, Alpi changed his physical regime, lost weight and concentrated on defensive duties. This affected his finishing, still work in progress for Adaptation. He will find his normal condition, becoming lean, losing weight, changing body type l believe all affects his finishing..
This is a really good point and something I have never thought of. A lot of times I ask something like "if this stat is wrong, why do you think it's wrong?" People are very very rarely able to come up with any good reasons, they just get mad and say "analytics are stupid!!!" You've got a really good reason here.
A lot of the guys above him are mostly just dunkers and dependant on others setting them up for easy dunks. Most of those guys aren't responsible for generating their own shots or generating shots for others night in night out. So you look at KAT, Embiid and Jokic, Sengun is not very far behind. A lot harder to have higher efficiency when you are working the post. Having said that its obvious he is missing a few bunnys every game which isnt helping his cause here.
Ime hasn't been doing defensive substitution in the clutch much anymore, because Sengun has become a much better rim protector. And you can still get dinged if you lose the ball on offense and get a fast break.
Sengun is having a down year finishing around the rim, but no reason to believe it won't come back to form later this year or next season. The only real major concern with Sengun's offense at the moment is his FT%. He was shooting 80% at the free throw line in Turkey, which is one of the reasons scouting reports were very hopeful on his ability to develop a 3PT shot since these two skills often go hand in hand. However, Sengun is shooting noticeably worse at the free throw line in the NBA than in Turkey, hovering barely above 70% through 4 season so far. That somewhat dampens the hopes that he can develop an effective three point shot anytime soon. This isn't to say that he won't develop one, but you ideally don't want to wait till he is 27-28 before he can start hitting 3s at a good clip.
