I know 7 who’ve lived in Baltimore since 1972…. They’re going to DM you shortly. I’m also guessing you want them to rebrand as well… so I’ll laugh at you.
Iirc they HAD to leave the Browns ‘history’ in CLE as part of the relocation agreement. Either by the city or NFL. Adams did not have those conditions imposed on him.
I was always a fan of the Players as much as the team. I know a lady who grew up sharing a property line with Bum Back Property rather than next door. I also graduates from the same University (Lamar) as Bum. He graduated when it was Lamar Tech and I graduated when it was Lamar University. My parents also graduated from the same High School as Earl Campbell which explains why I saw him in High School and at the State Championship game in the Astrodome. While I did meet Akeem Olajuwon on a business matter, it was not as personal of an attachment as the Oilier personnel.
Agree lol My anecdotal evidence (as someone that doesn't live in Houston), any time I bring up the Texans/being a Texans fan/being from Houston - among the first comments I hear from almost anyone are, "Worst name in professional sports." or "Are you a Cowboys fans." The identity of the team outside of Houston is nearly non-existent. At least our jerseys look better now. Name will always be terrible. More Houston blue please.
Names like Phillies, Packers, <insert derogatory Native American reference>, <insert generic bird, feline, horse, goat animal>, are all just peachy too. What’s a 49er? Kids always want to go as a “Bucanneer” for Halloween. All names are questionable till they’ve been around long enough to make sense. Yes, the team has no identity or fan base outside of Houston, which is why they’ll never get the 4:30 Sunday games during the season, and they’ll never get a prime time playoff game even when playing the media darlings. The majority of that is due to no real playoff success or deep playoff runs. (Then again, the Panthers have been to two SB’s since the Texans arrived, and they don’t have much presence outside Carolina… ditto Falcons… ditto Bucs).
Very rarely do teams name themselves something which is basically exclusionary at a regional/state level. It's hard to even point to another example of this in major American sports. "Yankees" is about as close there is, but that's kind of a unique case because the term means different things to different people (both in terms of locality and era/time).
Not the same. If the Colts had changed their name to the Speedways and put the horseshoe in mothballs then the horseshoe would still be associated with the city of Baltimore 40 years later. Indy did the smart thing and kept the name/color/logo and now it's connected to that city as well. Now if the fictional Indianapolis Speedways were to bring out the horseshoe uniforms 20 years later AND mostly against Baltimore....now you have apples to apples. Those would be BMore's uniforms
I don't really think that name is exclusionary. None more than "Steelers" or "Packers" or "Cowboys". Compared to say "Texans" where if you have no connection to Texas you probably struggle to see yourself being a fan.
Because it’s been around long enough. But we all know where oilers, packers and Steelers originate from, and it was at one point highly local. (As also is 49er) unfortunately this really doesn’t move the interest needle as a reason to toss out a now 23 plus year brand any more so than it does for the Titans to still be wishy washy about their now 30 year old brand.
