If it’s 10 for 200 it’s not about giving him a 10 year deal. It’s about lowering the AAV to a point where you have flexibility while he’s still good.
I just don't think you want to get stuck paying anyone that long who won't be worth it for the majority of the time no matter what. Either way, it's irrelevant, the Astros have moved on and won't be offering Bregman anything.
The Astros kind of felt they had to move on. They made an offer and then discussed a range later with Boras and there was a lot of stalling. Meanwhile the Astros had multiple holes to fill and only 4-5 guys to potentially fill those holes. The Paredes deal didn’t really change anything with Boras. The Astros needed a 1st baseman and outfielder. Walker had 5 teams trying to sign him. Astros had to react and did by signing him. Bregman was surprised I was told and expected he would end up in Houston with NYY or BOS as fall backs. Well that hasn’t happened yet. I haven’t heard this, but I have to believe teams are preparing shorter deals with opt outs for Bregman. Boston has the money but the man making decisions doesn’t love Alex. The Yankees are being fairly quiet. Toronto is out there. Maybe Crane decides to go over the tax this year and dip under next year - and gives Alex a big short term offer but I think the Astros would offer it to Santander first.
Also - for as much as I love Bregman as a ball player…. Tough, smart, obsessed with baseball… there is a fear that he dips into average starter territory soon.
I thought only the Astros would have medicals so far, no? Don't contracts get decided "pending physicals" where the team then gets to review medicals and that's why Correa's deal was voided after it was agreed to?
It appears 100% that the 6/156 is off the table then for Bregs. If it wasn't then I'd rather spend close to that amount and get Santander instead anyhow.
I called this cut in payroll Crane isn't paying a hefty tax to get knocked out in the wild card round.
Excellent article about Tyler Ivey trying to make a return to baseball. The Astros still own his rights. He had thoracic outlet syndrome and after making his MLB debut in 2021- essentially walked away from the game due to stress, burnout, and injury. His velocity is up. Pain free, and motivated.
great... a lot of those seats are showing their age. I don't want them changing the color though, the green works... but watch them do a rainbow scheme....
We need the outfield help. I'm pretty sure the front office can offer a good deal to one of those guys...
From the current free agents, I like Polanco (if they think he can play LF most days) and Heyward (as a platoon partner with Meyers). Adding those 2 would give the lineup 8 guys with potential to post a 3 fwar season plus the 9 hole comprised of Heyward/Meyers, who offer defensive value and some offense. I also think Andrew Heaney could end up being a really good value.
Middle class FA's unemployed... middle class teams not wanting to pay taxes. Mexican standoff. 2026 CBA can fix a lot (but it likely doesnt).
Why the **** would he even consider Arlington? Not that it really matters. It’s going to be the Los Angeles deferrals
